Conference Spotlight: Public Information Officers Track | IACP Blog

Tactical communication applied to public communications will be the theme of the PIO Section Track at the upcoming IACP 2012 Conference San Diego. From PIO 101 to using social media in crisis communications, to the ?Meet the Bloggers? panel discussion, you?ll hear and watch how police departments are strategically using public communications tools and skills to further?the mission of protection and service to communities.

In ?PIO 101?, learn to improve your messaging skills as a law enforcement executive, with strategies designed to build public that all-important trust and confidence ? two values needed for safe, effective policing.

The ?Chief, You?re Under Fire,? panel will feature experts who have faced some of the very human issues all employers face, but are magnified in public when they happen within a police department. Hear how these Chiefs and PIO?s have taken bold but beneficial approaches to a tough message.

And more and more police agencies are embracing social media. In panel discussions on ?Crisis Communications?, ?Building your own News Service? and ?Making Social Media Worth Your Time?, your agency can learn to maximize outreach to your citizens with tools that are now easily accessible and increasingly effective. The speakers on these panels are leading the way in leveraging innovative technologies with public safety and crime prevention information, tactics we can all start using tomorrow ? hopefully without the crisis!

Finally, the PIO Track will wrap up with a panel that?s always popular ? media members themselves taking about their relationships with chiefs, PIOs, and officers in the field. Hear from reporters on what they?ve seen that improves those relationships and what strains them. Then, stick around for the very informal, roundtable discussion.
