2013 Ford Escape Recalled Again Over Fire Risks, 7600 Crossovers Affected

Ford has issued another recall for the new 2013 Ford Escape crossover. The latest recall involves a dislodged cup plug in the engine cylinder head, which could cause a fire. The recall affects 7600 Escape models equipped with the 1.6-liter I-4 engine, 6150 of which are in the U.S.

The dislodged cup plug could lead to rapid discharge of coolant, which could combust if it comes in contact with hot engine components. Only vehicles with manually installed cup plugs are at risk, and Ford expects only 0.4 percent of all Escapes recalled to have faulty parts.

The recall is the second one issued concerning a fire risk, following a fuel line recall issued in July. Prior to that, Escape models were recalled for mis-positioned carpet padding, over fears that the padding could interfere with the brake pedal. Ford says only one fire has been reported, at a dealership before a customer took delivery. One of the vehicles investigated for the previous fuel line recall was found to be missing its cylinder head cup plug.

To carry out the recall, dealers will apply additional plug sealant, along with a secondary cap over the plug. The repair will take 3.5 hours.
