Etihad suspends flights to Syria capital

Etihad Airways, the UAE's national airline, said on Thursday it has suspended flights between Abu Dhabi and Damascus with immediate effect because of the deteriorating security situation in Syria.

"The decision, while not taken lightly, has been made due to the deteriorating security position in Syria," the airline said.

"The safety of passengers and crew is paramount to the airline," it said, adding that those passengers affected would be fully refunded for unused tickets.

Etihad said flights to the Syrian capital will remain suspended until further notice. The Etihad website said flights from Abu Dhabi to Beirut in Lebanon neighbouring Syria will continue as normal.

Last month, Royal Jordanian also suspended flights to Damascus and the northern Syrian city of Aleppo following deepening unrest in Jordan's northern neighbour.

Upwards of 25,000 people have been killed in more than 17 months of brutal conflict in Syria, according to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Etihad, from its hub at Abu Dhabi International Airport, flies to passenger and cargo destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and North America.

Party to celebrate chief zebra Jones - High School Sports - The ...

MEG WOCHNICK | Staff writer ? Published August 30, 2012 Modified August 29, 2012

When you ask Tom Jones what?s changed in officiating high school football and basketball spanning five decades, he doesn?t hesitate: the skill of the players.

?Kids are so much faster now,? said Jones, 77. ?That?s what?s happened to the high school game.?

If you?ve been to a football or basketball game in South Sound during the past 40 years, Jones has had something to do with it ? whether it was coaching, officiating or making assignments. He retired last year after 41 years with the Olympia-based South Sound Officials Association, including 35 years as the association?s game-assigning secretary.

For his long service in the community as an official and a coach, Olympia High School will honor Jones prior to its season-opening football game Friday night against nationally ranked Lake Oswego (Ore.), the defending Oregon 6A state champion, at Ingersoll Stadium. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.

Jones? career in zebra stripes started in the mid-1960s when he helped his brother-in-law officiate a boys basketball game at Olympia?s Jefferson Middle School. Soon after, he began officiating basketball and football.

He did that for more than 40 years and along the way helped spearhead the formation of the South Sound Officials Association in the early ?70s. The final football game Jones officiated was in 2010.

In addition to officiating, he coached Olympia?s fastpitch team for 14 seasons, until 2007.

In 2009, he was inducted into the Washington Officials Association?s Hall of Fame, but Jones said it means more to him to be honored at the local level.

?This is a local thing, so it makes it ? nicer than something at the state level,? said Jones, whose son, Tom Jones II, has been a basketball official in the area for 33 years.

Terry Simmonds, who has been with the SSOA since 1972 and took over in April from Jones as game assigner, said high school officials not working Friday night will be in attendance ? wearing their black-and-white stripes ? to help honor Jones.

Simmonds said 100 ceremonial coins have been made, and they feature a likeness of Jones on one side and the words ?South Sound Officials Association? on the other side. Jones will do the ceremonial coin toss, and former longtime KGY radio play-by-play broadcaster Dick Nichols will emcee the pregame event.

?He has done so much for not only our officials in our association, but with the state,? Simmonds said of Jones. ?He has mentored people to be better officials and to help our association be the best it can be.?

Tom Jones II said his father did whatever it took to assure the best quality of officials were at games, even if that meant that his father had to fill in on game nights.

?The effect of (how) he?s reached out to people is even mind-boggling to his son,? Jones II said. ?He?s always been my mentor. It?s going to be really exciting to see the outpouring of people.?

The ceremony for Jones is part of a big day planned at Ingersoll Stadium.

At 3 p.m. Friday, the Olympia and Lake Oswego junior varsity teams will play a game.

The main attraction is the varsity game between Olympia and Lake Oswego.

The Lakers, coached by former Oregon State wide receiver Steve Coury, finished last season ranked No. 23 in the ESPN/Powerade Fab 50 national rankings.

There will be a barbecue after the varsity game.

Olympia coach Bill Beattie said the challenge of facing the Oregon powerhouse will help his players and the Bears? coaching staff see and understand what it takes to get a program to a national level.

?We want our kids to be exposed to that,? Beattie said. ?They need to be able to chat with kids who have been at that level before. We know everyone around here, but to have a chance to be with a team that?s nationally ranked, it?s going to be exciting for our kids.?

FOOTBALL SEASON KICKS OFF TONIGHT

Two-a-days are complete, rosters are set and game plans have been installed.

The majority of South Sound teams kick off Friday, but Capital begins its season at 7 tonight on the road at Class 4A Newport High School in Bellevue.

It?s the first game of a tough nonleague schedule for the Cougars, who dropped down to Class 2A and also will face 4A foes Olympia, Bellarmine Prep and Bothell.

Sandwiched in-between is Capital?s 2A Evergreen Conference opener Sept. 22 against two-time EvCo champion Tumwater.

Capital and Newport have never faced each other in football.

In fact, the last time Newport faced a team from Thurston County was in 1993, when Tumwater defeated Newport, 31-30, in double overtime in the Class 3A state semifinals.

The Knights, who went 4-5 in 2011, feature senior quarterback Isaac Dotson (6-foot-3, 210 pounds), who gave an oral commitment to Nevada in June. As a junior, Dotson threw for 1,073 yards and rushed for 741 yards in Newport?s triple-option offense.

Capital, coming off a 3A state quarterfinal appearance in 2011, has a wealth of experience returning on both sides of the ball. Senior running back Kai Van Sickle rushed for 1,903 yards and scored 15 touchdowns last season.

NORTON, Mass. (AP) ? Tiger Woods had his lowest opening round in three years Friday in the Deutsche Bank Championship. It still wasn't enough to be low man in Sean Foley's coaching stable.

Seung-yul Noh, a rising star from South Korea in his first season on the PGA Tour, ran off four straight birdies early in his round and closed with back-to-back birdies on the TPC Boston for a 9-under 62.

That gave him a one-shot lead over Chris Kirk, whose 23 putts included an eagle on the new 18th hole.

Woods wasn't too shabby. He stirred up a big gallery on a glorious summer day in New England with six straight birdies, which featured four putts of at least 12 feet and flop shot executed so perfectly that it cleared a steep bunker and landed in an area of the green no larger than a hula hoop. His lone bogey on the final hole gave him a 7-under 64, putting him in a three-way tie for third with Jeff Overton and Ryan Moore.

The average score was just under 70 on a perfect day for scoring, except for the deceptive wind that swirled through the trees.

Rory McIlroy struggled off the tee, though he judged one of the lies in the rough beautifully on the ninth hole, a 7-iron into tap-in range that led to a 65.

Noh stole the show, even if hardly anyone was paying attention or was not really sure who he was.

"Some people say Kevin Na, like, 'Go Kevin,'" Noh said.

The 21-year-old from South Korea won his first Asian Tour title at age 17, and he chose to come over to America this year to ease his travel. He made it through Q-school in December, and on Friday turned in his strongest PGA Tour round to date.

"Everything good today," Noh said.

He went to work with Foley in May, mentioning the roster of clients as one of his reasons ? Woods, Hunter Mahan, Justin Rose.

"He's a good kid," Mahan said after a much-needed 68. "If Foley says, 'Do this 1,000 times,' he'll go home and do it 1,000 times."

The start was more meaningful for Overton, whose game has practically disappeared since he played on the Ryder Cup team two years ago. He is No. 83 in the FedEx Cup standings, and only the top 70 advance next week to the third playoff event at Crooked Stick in Indiana ? his home state.

"I'm constantly getting a lot of great text messages and people say, 'Hey, we're really excited to see you at Crooked Stick,' just the whole Hoosier nation," Overton said. "It's just going to be fun if I can get into the event."

He had his own birdie streak, only on the opposite end of the course from Woods. Overton made five straight birdies through the 16th hole, and then added one more birdie on the 18th hole for a 64 that put him atop the leaderboard with Woods from the morning session.

Woods played with Barclays winner Nick Watney and Brandt Snedeker, two players who are trying to make enough of an impression on Davis Love III to be selected as Ryder Cup captain's picks on Tuesday. Snedeker scrambled his way to a respectable 69. Watney, who has never finished higher than 33rd on the TPC Boston, never looked comfortable in his round of 72.

Dustin Johnson, another candidate to get one of the four Ryder Cup selections, opened with a 67.

Rickie Fowler overcame a rugged start to salvage a 71. Jim Furyk and Steve Stricker, likely to get two of the picks, each had a 69.

Getting off to a good start is nothing new for Woods. This was the 14th time in 18 tournaments this year that he was at par or better. Lately, it's been about the finishes. Even though Woods has won three times this year ? the most of anyone on the PGA Tour ? he has turned in some peculiar weekends. Twice he was tied for the lead at majors going into the final two rounds and stumbled. Last week at Bethpage Black, he had a 72-76 weekend to drop into the middle of the pack.

Woods doesn't seem bothered by all this. He attributed last week to extreme conditions on the greens at Bethpage in the third round, and a final round that simply got away from him on a three-hole stretch on the back nine.

"It wasn't like I was hitting a lot of awful shots," he said. "I just needed a couple putts to go my way, and it didn't happen. I should be right around par, and it turns into an over-par round. Today was about the same as I have been playing pretty much all summer, just go out there and playing pretty consistent. It was just a nice, solid round."

There was a stretch when it all looked so easy.

Woods hit a full swing, flop shot behind the 12th green to a few feet away to save par, the only time he was seriously in trouble. He hit a high cut with a 5-iron to a tough pin on the par-3 11th for birdie from 15 feet, and he holed an 18-foot birdie putt on the 13th.

The streak began with a 6-iron to the middle of the 18th green for a two-putt birdie. He rolled in birdie putts from the 12-foot to 18-foot range on the next three holes, and while he nearly holed out with a wedge on No. 5, his best work came at the 293-yard fourth hole.

Woods can reach the green with a 3-wood, but he felt the wind gust into his face, and opted for a driver, playing for a baby cut to take off some distance and get it into the front bunker for a relatively easy up-and-down. Instead, it came a yard short of the sand, and he had to play a high flop to a tiny section of the green that ran away from him.

"I had to play an all-out shot to try to keep it on the green," he said. "I went for it, and it came off."

His bid for a seventh straight birdie ? the last time he had a streak that long was the third round at the 2005 Masters that carried into Sunday morning ? was a 12-footer up the hill on the sixth hole. He took a step toward the hole as the ball was a foot away, sure it was going to drop, and stopped in his tracks as the ball turned slightly to the left. He spun around and removed his cap in disbelief.

As many as he was making, perhaps it was a shock to see one miss.

"Unfortunately, it just wiggled about a half-ball left, where I thought it was going to wiggle about a half-ball right," he said.

The round ended on a sour note, with a 7-iron as the wind briefly died. The ball went into the collar of the green, sitting down just enough that he tried to swing hard enough to generate speed and spin the ball. It didn't work out, and the chip ran 12 feet by. He missed for his only bogey, and tossed his putter at the bag in disgust. Anyone who had not seen the previous 17 holes might have thought it was another tough day at the office.

Instead, it was his lowest score since a 64 in the opening round of the 2009 AT&T National at Congressional.

Shisha smoking as bad as cigarettes for lungs: study

Water-pipe smoking is as bad as deeply inhaling cigarette smoke when it comes to causing respiratory problems, according to a study published on Thursday.

Researchers led by Mohammad Hossein Boskabady at Masshad University of Medical Sciences in Iran monitored lung functions among 57 local water-pipe smokers, 30 deep-inhalation cigarette smokers and 51 normal-inhalation smokers.

They also studied 44 non-smokers for a comparison.

Wheezing occurred among 23 percent of the water-pipe users, 30 percent of the deep-inhalation and 21.6 percent of normal-inhalation cigarette smokers, but only among 9.1 percent of non-smokers.

Coughing occurred among 21 percent, 36.7 percent and 19.6 percent of the smoking groups, compared with 6.8 percent of non-smokers, according to the probe, which measured smokers over three months in two consecutive years.

Sputum production, meanwhile, was found in 14 percent, 10 percent, 3.9 per cent respectively among the various smoking groups, but among 6.8 percent of the non-smoking group.

The results, published in the peer-reviewed journal Respirology, adds a further scientific blow to the defenders of shisha who claim that water pipes are safer because they filter out tobacco toxins.

The water pipe, often used with sweet or fruit-flavoured tobacco, is a centuries-old tradition in the Middle East but in recent years has become fashionable among young westerners, particularly women.

"Our findings reveal that there were profound effects of water-pipe smoking on lung function values, which were similar to the effects observed in deep-inhalation cigarette smokers," Boskabady said in a press release.

"Normal" inhalation cigarette smoking had less of an effect compared to the water pipe, but still contributed significantly to respiratory disorders, the paper stressed.

According to a 2005 study by the UN World Health Organisation (WHO), water pipe smoke has high concentrations of toxic compounds, including carbon monoxide, heavy metals, cancer-causing chemicals and potentially addictive levels of nicotine.

Cigarette smokers typically take eight to 12 puffs over five to seven minutes, inhaling a total of 0.5 to 0.6 of a litre of smoke.

In contrast, waterpipe sessions typically last 20-80 minutes, during which the smoker may take 50-20 puffs which each range from 0.15 to one litre each.

"The waterpipe smoker may therefore inhale as much smoke during one session as a cigarette smoker would inhale consuming 100 or more cigarettes," the WHO said.

The Iranian research used a gadget called a spirometer to measure how deeply smokers inhaled and retained the puff.

"Normal" inhalers typically inhaled less than 10 percent above a benchmark of lung inflation called tidal volume. For "deep" inhalers, it was typically more than 30 percent, and for water-pipe smokers it was usually 40 percent above tidal volume.

When you choose to spend your money and time at an on the web casino, you?re placing your trust in that casino to use software that is fair to participants. Obviously, any net casino that does not have a decent payment schedule dangers going out of business, because there are therefore many net casinos where people really do gain decent money. But when you go online to risk, you need to understand that the software powering those games you love is genuine and has been tested and accepted as being fair to participants. Three of the largest computer software vendors for top level casinos online are Rival Gaming, Realtime Gaming, and Vegas Technology.Real-time Gaming has existed since 1999, operating from USA, Atlanta, and Costa Rica. They quickly developed a reputation with participants and with the business as being among the best application suppliers for net casinos. They are probably most fabled for Real Series slots, which are popular with players. One characteristic participants specially like with Real Series slots is that they may set it on Auto Play and play automatically. Operators that use Real-time Gaming software have a lot of freedom concerning how they implement the software. They may, for example, select how high or low they need the payment percentages to be on a game-by-game schedule. For people, this can make it a little harder to figure out which providers would be the most good. Win Palace Casino is one of the top Real-time Gaming-powered internet casinos.Rival Gaming is smaller than a few of its rivals, but the software it self has a good reputation for quality. Rival has been opening casinos since 2006, and has fast become a favorite with players. Owned by a Cyprus-based organization named Black Chip Ltd., all Rival Gaming casinos are registered in Curacao. DaVinci?s Gold and Chocolate Casino are two common Competing Gaming Casinos. The interactive slots, or iSlots, are often the largest draws at Rival Gaming casinos because of the good graphics and exciting subjects. Also, people have the ability to affect the outcome of bonus units, and many find this to be a very desirable characteristic of Rival Gaming?s iSlots.Vegas Technology has software for over 100 casino activities, but they concentrate on slots and online slots competitions. Lucky 7s, the only seven-reel slots game was developed by vegas Technology on the market. Many of its slots activities have American styles (?Red White & Win,? ?Independence Day?), and they cater to American people. Daily tournaments are a notable element of Vegas Technology casinos, but there are also freeroll tournaments and buy-in tournaments. Along with slots tournaments, Vegas Technology-based casinos will also be huge in blackjack and video poker tournaments. Vegas Technology application is available in an instant-play structure that is compatible with Apple computers, which includes been yet another major draw to American players. The software is audited regularly by an independent auditor for normal payout percentages and fairness, and this is good to people that they are being treated fairly. VIP Slots Casino and Super Slots Casino are two top online casinos that use Vegas Technology software.Checking out regular payment reports and audits of online casinos that use top casino software are good ways to ensure that you?ll be treated fairly when you perform at a casino online.

    Panasonic's 103-inch glasses-less 3D plasma panel arrives at IFA (eyes-on)

While it might not be as huge as the Super Hi Vision panel lingering in the same darkened theater, Panasonic's new 103-inch demonstration display has the ability to offer up a 3D view to five different viewers -- as long as they're in the right visual sweet spot. The effect is subtle, natural, although colors felt little bit muted compared to the 145-inch prototype, with the demo videos drawing us in to its demo reel, rather than pushing out an image. The plasma display panel prototype is also glasses-free, with the 4K2K screen able to push out enough pixels to offer these multiple viewing angles. But again, there's no substitute for being there yourself.

Zhangjiajie Club ? Types of Travel Insurance in China Now

At present, China?s travel insurance mainly includes three types:

    1, travel agency liability insurance?

This kind of insurance is paid by travel agency. But liability insurance company will make compensation only when the travel service is at fault.

    2, travel accident insurance

Tourists need to pay for it by themselves in case of travel risk.

    3, high risk insurance

Also, the same as travel accident insurance, it should be paid by visitors.

After buying travel insurance, visitors can not only get a relative compensation if some accident happens during the process of going sightseeing, but also travel in a much more securely way. If you are interested in the details, maybe you can get a further consultant from insurance company.
