Apple Says It Will Audit One Of Its Chinese Production Facilities Following Report On Horrible Working Conditions (AAPL)

Tim Cook Apple

?

Apple has responded to a harsh report from China Labor Watch today that says conditions at one of Apple's manufacturing facilities are really bad for workers.

The CLW report specifically focuses on Pegatron, one of the facilities where some Apple products are made. It criticizes the facility for having poor working conditions and forcing employees to work overtime without pay.

The report is based on interviews with Pegatrong employees.?You can read the whole thing here.

In the statement, Apple says it has audited Pegatron several times and the average work week for an employee there is 46 hours.?

Apple also confirmed that Pegatron withheld ID badges from some employees and demanded the practice be stopped.

As for the other claims in the CLW report, Apple says many are new, but will be following up on each with an audit.

Here's Apple's statement, as reported by The Wall Street Journal:

Apple is committed to providing safe and fair working conditions throughout our supply chain. We lead the industry with far-reaching and specialized audits, the most transparent reporting and educational programs that enrich the lives of workers who make our products. Apple is the first and only technology company to be admitted to the Fair Labor Association, and we are dedicated to protecting every worker in our supply chain.

As a part of our extensive Supplier Responsibility program, Apple has conducted 15 comprehensive audits at Pegatron facilities since 2007, covering more than 130,000 workers making Apple products including annual audits of Pegatron?s final assembly locations and surprise audits at both RiTeng and AVY within the past 18 months.

Additionally, we have closely tracked working hours at all of these facilities. Our most recent survey in June found that Pegatron employees making Apple products worked 46 hours per week on average. Excessive overtime is not in anyone?s best interest, and we work closely with our suppliers to prevent it. Apple surveys working hours for more than 1 million employees across our supply chain each month and we report the findings on our website.

We have been in close contact with China Labor Watch for several months, investigating issues they?ve raised and sharing our findings. When they first told us that workers? ID cards were being withheld, an auditor from our Supplier Responsibility program was on site the next day to investigate. We confirmed that labor brokers for Pegatron were holding a small number of IDs as they helped set up bank accounts for those employees. We demanded Pegatron put a stop to this practice and a new system was in place within a week.

Their latest report contains claims that are new to us and we will investigate them immediately. Our audit teams will return to Pegatron, RiTeng and AVY for special inspections this week. If our audits find that workers have been underpaid or denied compensation for any time they?ve worked, we will require that Pegatron reimburse them in full.

Our audits involve a thorough review of timecards and other documents to guard against falsification. We will investigate these new claims thoroughly, ensure that corrective actions are taken where needed and report any violations of our code of conduct. We will not tolerate deviations from our code.

Apple believes in transparency and accountability, both for our suppliers and ourselves. We realize being a leader in workers rights and being transparent with our findings opens us to criticism, but we believe strongly that we can make a big difference in the lives of millions of people by doing so and this provides us the courage and resilience to continue the journey. We are proud of the work we do with our suppliers to uncover problems and improve conditions for workers. By vigorously enforcing our supplier code of conduct, we ensure that our suppliers follow the same principles and values we hold true.

Facebook shares are soaring after the social media giant reported a much-improved second-quarter revenue and profit as it pushes hard into mobile advertising.

The stock is trading at levels not seen since shortly after its IPO last year.

Facebook began showing mobile advertisements for the first time last spring. It said late Wednesday that they accounted for a whopping 41 percent of its total advertising revenue. That advertising had been a big concern for investors since the initial public offering.

Revenue jumped 53 percent to $1.81 billion and the Menlo, Calif., company easily topped Wall Street expectations for the quarter.

Shares jumped more than 25 percent by midmorning Thursday and hit as high as $34 earlier in the day.

Pipelines critical to Canada's economic future: Clement

Tony Clement, president of the Treasury Board of Canada, was in Prince Edward Island this week. He is pictured here touring OmniActive Health Technologies, a bioscience company in Charlottetown.

Getting Canada?s oil to market is vital in sustaining the country?s economic wealth, and the only way to do so is by train or pipeline, Federal Treasury Board President Tony Clement told the Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce Wednesday.

In response to a question by a member, Clement spoke at length about his frustration with opposition to resource development and pipelines.

?If we want health care in the future, if we want to be able to pay for our schools and educating our kids, we need these resources to be out of the ground,? Clement said.

?Maybe I?m on an economic literacy crusade here, but we?ve got to be able to explain to people that part of our wealth as a society is going to be from exploiting these resources, getting them to market.?

The Lac-Megantic rail disaster earlier this month has reignited debate over how crude oil is shipped across the country.

The accident has led some to suggest pipelines may be safer than trains for transporting of crude.

The debate is a timely one for eastern Canada. TransCanada Corp. has publicly stated recently it may soon go ahead with a pipeline to transport oil to Atlantic Canada.

The proposed Energy East project would convert an existing natural gas pipeline to move crude from the Alberta oil sands to refineries in Montreal and New Brunswick.

It could then be shipped by tanker to markets in the U.S. and abroad.

Clement said Wednesday the United States will be self-sufficient in oil in the next four years, so Canada must have the ability to move its crude to Europe and Asia.

?That means a west-to-east pipeline,? he said.

?I can?t tell you how many constituents in my constituency say, ?Boy I wish we had more Alberta oil. Why are we buying oil from Venezuela?? Ok, well how else are we going to get it here? Train or pipeline. There?s not many other choices. So we?ve got to deal with that.?

P.E.I. Premier Robert Ghiz and New Brunswick Premier David Alward have both expressed support for the idea of an eastern pipeline.

Ghiz told The Guardian Tuesday he expects it will be a topic of discussion at the meeting of Canada?s premiers this week in Ontario.

?I think it?s a very good idea for our region,? Ghiz said.

?St. John has a great port, a deep water area there that can easily transport crude? I think that it can be good for our economy.?

Clement has been in Prince Edward Island for the last three days, meeting with business groups and companies across the province.

He encouraged the member of the Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce Wednesday to publicly support the transport of Canada?s crude and the proposed eastern pipeline project.

?I really do think this is critical to our economic future and that?s not just Alberta or Saskatchewan or B.C. It?s everybody.?

McDonalds sales fall in Europe and Asia as economic crisis bites ...

Published time: July 24, 2013 09:47 Spencer Platt/Getty Images/AFP

McDonalds warns global weakness means its clients have started saving on burgers. The fast-food chain posted disappointing results after years of double digit increase in profits each quarter.

The fast food giant delivered second quarter profits of $1.4bn on Monday ? a 4% increase on the same period last year. It fell short of analysts' forecasts marking a dramatic slowdown in growth. Revenues rose 2% to $7.1bn. That?s below the $7.9bn revenue expected by analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.

Although the company?s shares gained more than 13 per cent in the year to date, it has lagged behind the market and some of its competitors. Burger King shares have risen nearly 20%, while Wendy?s shares are up almost 22%, according to the FT. The company?s shares lost 3.5% on the back of the news.

McDonald's chief executive Don Thompson says the economic crisis was biting into sales.

"The informal eating out market remains challenging and economic uncertainty is pressuring consumer spending," ? the Telegraph quotes Thompson.? ?Based on recent sales trends, our results for the remainder of the year are expected to remain challenged.?

McDonald's global sales increased by 1% for the 1st quarter, primarily due to the U.S. that accounts for a third of total sales. U.S. sales increased by 1%,? Europe saw 0.1% fall, Asian sales decreased by 0.3%.

Growth is also slowing down in Russia, where the fast-food giant still posts double digit results business daily Vedomosti reports.? Last year sales of its two Russian subsidiaries, LLC McDonald's and CJSC Moscow-McDonald's increased by 19.6% to 55.4 billion rubles, while the year before - they were up 24.8% (year on year),? according to SPARK data.
Mcdonalds is well ahead of its fast-food competitors in Russia with the market share of 19.3%
Vedomosti quotes? Euromonitor International. However the competition is increasing : Burger King market share? has risen to 3.1% in 2012 from 1.5% in 2011. Subway takes up to 2,7%.? Euromonitor estimates the Russian fast-food market at $9.4bn last year, Vedomosti reports.

This year McDonald's will open fewer restaurants than planned and reduce capital expenditure, Vedomosti quotes Thompson. Responding to the "headwinds of the world economy"? McDonald?s has tries to attract customers through cheaper deals on the menu and promoting combined dinners in Europe, the FT reports.

Stamps quietly explored trading Nik Lewis in off-season after twitter firestorm

?

Stampeders slotback Nik Lewis thought he would be traded in the off-season.

Photograph by: Stuart Gradon , Calgary Herald

Over the span of his 10-year CFL career, Nik Lewis has committed various and sundry transgressions in the eyes of the officials.

But this past winter, the punishing slotback figured he had stepped offside in the eyes of his employer for the last time.

In fact, Lewis was convinced the final gun had sounded on his time as a Calgary Stampeder.

?I thought I was gone,? Lewis says. ?Honestly, I thought I was gone.

He?s still here.

?It didn?t happen, and that?s just the nature of the business,? Lewis says. ?So my job is to go out, help this team win, put up the numbers and be a leader and a role model to some of the younger guys and keep everyone practising hard and striving to be better.?

Sources say the Stampeders quietly explored the possibility of moving Lewis this winter for reasons other than his on-field performance.

The matter came up after commissioner Mark Cohon slapped the loquacious pass catcher with a fine last November for violating the CFL?s social media policy with a tweet that referenced the O.J. Simpson trial.

Lewis wrote: ?I just bought OJ?s gloves on eBay. Now all I need is a white girl named Nicole.?

He added the hashtag #MaybeALittleToFar

In the eyes of team ownership, Lewis went way offside on the play ? so far, in fact, the club considered parting ways with the second-leading receiver in franchise history.

?I?ve always been a jokester and I?ve never meant any ham to anyone,? Lewis says. ?My thing is like I just have to mature enough and understand that other people?s perception of me is what matters. That?s what I?ve learned.

?When I say something, it?s not about how I mean it. It?s about how they take it. So my biggest thing now, is that I want to be a leader on this team, and help this team win and get us back to where we were last year and finish it off.?

So far, so good. Through four games, Lewis leads the Stamps in receiving with 19 catches for 221 yards and two touchdowns.

His numbers from Saturday?s 38-27 victory over the Montreal Alouettes aren?t exactly eye-popping (five catches for 41 yards and a touchdown.) Even still, the team presented him with the game ball for offensive player of the game.

?He?s been excellent,? says offensive co-ordinator Dave Dickenson. ?He made a great play on a short throw. He broke a few tackles. On second-and-10, they had us covered, and two or three guys could have tackled him. That?s what got us our first points. If he doesn?t make that effort and come up with that play, who knows if we?re able to make the comeback that we did.

?He also crushed a guy blocking to set up a great run for us. So he does a lot of things that a lot of people don?t notice.?

Now if Lewis can go unnoticed of the field, the Stamps will be all the more thrilled.

?The organization just wants quality people on and off the field,? Dickenson says. ?I really believe Nik is quality. He?s always willing, in my opinion, to sacrifice and do what it takes to win.

?It?s just the odd time when he gets himself too bored at home, and he needs to get off the computer.?

On the field, Lewis is a bit of a freak of nature. Listed at five-foot-10, 240 pounds, he looks more like a sawed-off defensive end than a prototypical receiver.

But no one can argue with the results.

?He needs to make sure he stays in good shape,? Dickenson says. ?But his effectiveness hasn?t necessarily been from outrunning people. He has great hands. He has great body control, as you can tell. He?s tough to defend for the smaller guys, because of his size. And then they put a bigger guy on him and they?re unable to stay with him.?

In terms of staying here, Lewis is thankful he isn?t doing a Geroy Simon and adjusting to a new area code.

?When I thought I was leaving, I was about to make some phone calls and call a couple of receivers and see how it would mix with me coming in there,? he says. ?But after I sat back and thought about it, I was like, ?hold on. I don?t want to leave. I don?t want to leave Calgary. It?s a great place, a great city with great people here. I don?t want to leave.?

?I?ve almost built something with a lot of holes on it. And now I?m just going through and cleaning up all the holes. I?m glad they gave me the opportunity to come back.

?And I?m grateful for it.?

Short yardage: WR Joe West (separated shoulder) is out indefinitely. Fullback Tim St. Pierre (knee) is also doubtful for Friday?s game in Winnipeg.

Lorgat appointed Cricket South Africa's new CEO

Former International Cricket Council CEO Haroon Lorgat was on Saturday appointed as the new chief executive officer of the Cricket South Africa (CSA), replacing the controversial Gerald Majola.

The CSA made the announcement in a terse statement after the board interviewed three shortlisted candidates for the position, although commentators have been saying that Lorgat was the top candidate.

- BCCI could pull out of SA tour if Lorgat is elected CEO

"Mr Lorgat's appointment follows a thorough and rigorous process to fill this important position," CSA president Chris Nenzani said in the statement.

"The quality of the candidates was exceptional and I would like to express my appreciation to the sub-committee of the Board as well as my colleagues on the Board who have brought this matter to a highly satisfactory conclusion," he added.

The candidacy of Lorgat was highly controversial amid earlier reports that the Board of Control for Cricket in India had tried to influence CSA not to appoint him.

Haroon LorgatLorgat had been at loggerheads with the BCCI during his tenure at the ICC.

But earlier this week, reliable sources said Lorgat had received the approval of former BCCI president Inderjit Singh Bindra, who is also the president of the Punjab Cricket Association for the past 35 years.

This, coupled with a change of guard at BCCI, including the departure of fierce Lorgat critic N Srinivasan, is believed to have eased tensions at CSA about the influence of the BCCI.

Lorgat served as treasurer to the forerunner of CSA, the United Cricket Board of South Africa, in 2004 and 2005 and as convenor of selectors for the national squad from 2004 to 2007 before taking over as ICC chief executive in 2008 for a four-year term.

Lorgat's appointment is expected to signal a new era in the administration of cricket in South Africa after the bitter in-fighting resulting from decisions by dismissed chief
executive Gerald Majola.

The almost three-year period of Majola, several top executives were ousted or resigned until Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula intervened by setting up the Nicholson inquiry which fingered Majola for breaches of corporate governance and recommended disciplinary action as well as criminal investigation.

Majola was subsequently fired in 2010 after refusing to continue with his disciplinary hearing.

Among Lorgat's major tasks will be re-instilling confidence in sponsors who increasingly shied away from CSA in the aftermath for the Majola saga.

Cowboys help to rope supporters into local Cancer Council events

WALKING for 18 hours straight might not be everyone's cup of tea, but breast cancer survivor Jody Lingard has got everyone from her family to the Cowboys in her Relay For Life cheer squad.

Ms Lingard plans to enter at least three teams and raise $10,000 in the Townsville event next month.

Her fundraising got a welcome boost yesterday when the North Queensland Cowboys hosted a charity morning tea where, for a donation, guests got to sample a dazzling array of purple goodies.

The mother-of-three has lost both breasts and had a double reconstruction. The risk of the cancer returning remains and so she makes sure to get regular check ups.

"It was a pretty difficult time so the Cancer Council helped me a lot with counselling and support," she said.

Cowboys game development officer and former player Aaron Payne was among those who joined in with the fun at the morning tea.

"Most people in their life will either get cancer or know someone who will so it's great we can be a part of this," he said.

The Townsville Relay For Life will be held from 2.30pm August 24 to 9am August 25. Teams are required to raise $1000 and can register up until the day before the event at www.relayforlife.org.au

A Purple Power Walk will be held on The Strand today, starting at the Rockpool at 3pm. Wear purple.

HTC One Mini competes with Apple iPhone 5 for single hand crown (Gallery)

Yesterday HTC announced the HTC One Mini and that afternoon I had a chance to sit down with them and try out the Mini. I really like my T-Mobile HTC One and love the feel of the device in my hand, but the HTC One Mini almost disappears in my hand and is a direct competitor to the iPhone 5 for top dog in the premium one-handed smartphone category.

While Android and Windows Phone devices have taken off in display size, Apple has kept things small with 3.5 inch and 4 inch displays. I have an iPhone 5 and when I am going out for the night and want a device that slips into and disappears in my pocket I choose the iPhone over all the others. The HTC One Mini feels even better than the iPhone 5 in your hand and I agree with Rich Brome's statement, "The One mini is hands-down the best-feeling phone I have ever held in one hand."

HTC was able to include the fantastic BoomSound dual-front facing stereo speakers, unique ultra-pixel camera with all the latest 4.2.2 improvements, and an aluminum shell that can't be beat. You will find the bezel is plastic instead of metal, which HTC said saves on device construction costs and really doesn't take much away from the premium feel.

The 4.3 inch display looks fantastic and even though the resolution is smaller than we see on the HTC One, the smaller size means the pixel density remains high at 341 ppi. I tested out BlinkFeed, played with the camera application, and jumped around the device a bit. It felt responsive and the experience matched what I see on my HTC One. I'll get a chance to test out the battery life, performance, camera quality, and much more when a future review unit arrives.

We don't yet know when and where it is coming in the US. My wife loves her HTC One, but I think she would take the HTC One Mini instead since it fits her hand better and she never uses the IR functionality, LTE, or NFC so she wouldn't even notice the things left out to make the device smaller.

Arts leaders fear sale of Detroit museum's works to pay debt

In a June 13, 2013 photo, The Thinker, by Rodin is displayed outside the Detroit Institute of Arts in Detroit. In a quest to balance the budget in cash-strapped Detroit, the city's emergency manager is proposing a controversial idea: sell the city's art. (AP Photo/Carlos Osorio)

    View and purchase photos

Some lawmakers and arts leaders have been vowing to protect one of Detroit's most valuable assets: its art, which is estimated to be worth billions. But without a law prohibiting the sale of the Detroit Institute of Arts' collection, it is unclear whether the city can shield the works from creditors now that it has filed for bankruptcy.

In May, the city's emergency manager, Kevyn Orr, requested an inventory of the DIA's collection, causing concern among arts leaders that the works could be sold if the city filed for bankruptcy. In June, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette issued an opinion that the city's art could not be sold to pay off its estimated $19 billion in debt, citing the state's charitable trust law.

The state Senate recently passed a bill that would prohibit the sale of the city's art unless sold to a comparable institution to further the museum's core mission. But the bill has yet to become law, and the museum has hired attorneys to advise it on protecting the art.

"I'm obviously concerned," said Ford Bell, president of the American Alliance of Museums. "We thought that this was behind us in terms of the collection at the DIA, but I'm not an attorney so I don't know what could happen. This has never happened before."

The collection is undoubtedly valuable. Graham W.J. Beal, director of the DIA, has called it one of the most valuable in the Western Hemisphere. An independent assessment by the Detroit Free Press estimated that the bulk of the collection could be worth $2.5 billion, although the exact value is impossible to determine because it is rare for so many valuable works to hit the auction block. The DIA has more than 60,000 works spanning centuries, with nearly 90 percent of the pieces in storage.

According to the appraisals by the Free Press, the most valuable paintings in the collection include Tintoretto's "The Dreams of Men" from the 16th century, valued at $100 million, and Matisse's "The Window," valued at $150 million.

Museum officials on Thursday vowed to monitor the situation. "We remain committed to our position that the Detroit Institute of Arts and the City of Detroit hold the DIA's collection in trust for the public and we stand by our charge to preserve and protect the cultural heritage of all Michigan residents," the museum said in a statement.

Selling a museum's permanent collection ? or deaccessioning art ? is frowned upon by the American Alliance of Museums, which has a code of ethics that requires that works be sold only "for the advancement of the museum's mission," not for operating costs. The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington recently deaccessioned 25 carpets in storage that did not meet the museum's core mission, raising more than $40 million for its endowment.

MCX Crude Oil trades steady ahead of inventory data

MUMBAI (Commodity Online): Crude oil prices at India?s Multi Commodities Exchange (MCX) witnessed a positive phenomenon. Crude oil for July delivery is trading around Rs 6244-6275 per bbl.

Investors digested data on U.S. industrial production and consumer price inflation ahead of U.S. weekly supply data to gauge strength of oil demand. U.S. crude inventories plunged 20 million barrels over the previous two weeks, the deepest two-week draw on record, EIA data showed.

On Nymex, crude oil is trading down at $105.20 per bbl.

On Wednesday trade, July crude oil rose to a high of 6275 Rs/bbl at 02.50 pm IST and is expected to trade positive in later session. For intra-day, support is now seen at 6210, 6190 levels and resistance at 6310 & 6332, analyst said.

In the evening session, U.S crude inventory data may put pressure on future prices. We expect MCX crude oil to trade with bullish bias.

Determined Mursi supporters plan rallies across Egypt

By Noah Browning and Crispian Balmer

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood called for mass protests on Friday in its campaign to reverse the army's overthrow of the elected Islamist president, but it also gave a first sign of willingness to negotiate with its opponents.

The rallies aim to show Mohamed Mursi's supporters are not ready to accept the new military-backed government. However, a Brotherhood official also told Reuters on Thursday that the movement had proposed a framework for talks mediated by the EU.

Sworn into office on Tuesday, the cabinet of interim premier Hazem el-Beblawy busied itself with tackling the nation's many woes, buying foreign wheat to replenish stocks and banking $3 billion in badly needed aid from the United Arab Emirates.

Egypt's interim President Adli Mansour will address the nation on Thursday at 9 p.m. (3 p.m. ET), state TV said. The speech comes on the eve of planned mass pro- and anti-Mursi rallies. It will be Mansour's first speech since he was sworn in on July 4.

Still stunned by the July 3 toppling of Mursi, his Muslim Brotherhood, and allies grouped in what it calls the National Alliance for Legitimacy, urged nationwide rallies on Friday, predicting millions would take to the streets.

"To every free Egyptian man and woman: Come out against the bloody military coup," the alliance said in a statement.

Brotherhood official Gehad el-Haddad, who represented the movement in previous EU-facilitated talks with other political groups, told Reuters that the organization would not retreat from its demand for the reinstatement of Mursi, Egypt's first freely elected leader.

However, signaling for the first time a formal readiness for negotiations, he said the Brotherhood had proposed through an EU envoy a framework for talks to resolve Egypt's crisis. "We never close the door to dialogue," Haddad said.

The EU envoy, Bernardino Leon, said the two sides remained far apart. It is hard to imagine the army letting Mursi return to power. The military has denied orchestrating a coup, saying it intervened to prevent chaos following mammoth protests on June 30 against Mursi's much-criticized, year-long rule.

Egypt, the most populous nation in the Arab world, is a strategic hinge between the Middle East and North Africa and has long been a vital U.S. ally in the region.

    WAR WORRIES

The African Union warned on Thursday that Egypt risked being engulfed by civil war unless its government embraced Islamists - none of whom were included in the 33-strong cabinet.

Egypt's Nour Party, the country's second-biggest Islamist group which had initially backed a military-led roadmap to guide the country to new elections, said on Thursday the government would have to seek a way forward with the Muslim Brotherhood.

"I believe that those in power need to realize that increasing pressure on the Muslim Brotherhood and playing down the emotions of their supporters will lead to extremely bad results," Nour party spokesman Nader Bakkar told Reuters TV.

At least 99 people have died in street clashes since Mursi's downfall, more than half of them when troops fired on Islamist protesters outside a Cairo barracks on July 8.

A security source told the official Middle East News Agency that policing would be intensified at "all important and vital facilities" on Friday.

Tamarud, the movement which organized the massive anti-Mursi protests, has also called for rallies on Friday, including one close to a Cairo intersection where thousands of Brotherhood supporters have been holding a vigil for weeks.

It dubbed the rallies "the people against terrorism", blaming Mursi followers for recent violence.

Three members of the security forces died overnight in attacks blamed on Islamist militants in the Sinai peninsula, which borders Israel and the Gaza Strip. The militants have pledged to continue the fight until the return of Mursi, who has been held in an undisclosed location since his downfall.

Among the many accusations leveled against Mursi was mismanagement of the economy. The budget deficit has soared to about $3.2 billion a month, foreign reserves are more than 50 percent below their December 2010 levels and unemployment is more than 13 percent.

Bread has traditionally been one of Egypt's most explosive issues and an ex-minister from Mursi's government said last week that the country had less than two months' supply of imported wheat in its stocks, well below its preferred six-month supply.

Looking to narrow the shortfall, Egypt's main wheat-buying agency, the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC), bought 300,000 tonnes of wheat from global suppliers - only the second such purchase since February.

The cash-strapped government got a fillip with the arrival of the UAE aid, part of $12 billion that Gulf Arab states pledged after Mursi's removal. Saudi Arabia is due to transfer $2 billion in the coming days, Egypt's central bank said.

The funds should buy the cabinet time to try and fix Egypt's numerous problems, although analysts have warned it might also persuade officials to delay difficult decisions needed to right the listing economy.

Officials: Bombing kills 4 people in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi officials say a bombing targeting a stream where youngsters had sought refuge from the summer heat has killed four people.

It was the second such attack in less than a week.

Police officials say the bombing took place on Wednesday in Wajihiya, a town 80 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of Baghdad. Two swimmers and two passers-by were killed.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

Violence has been on the rise since the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Earlier this week, a mortar attack on swimmers in the Tigris River killed four people.
