In this post, I?ll talk about why this new industry data is so powerful, as well as review the other great insights you can get from this tool. If you haven?t already gotten your free AdWords Performance Report, now is a great time to get it. And if you?ve graded your account in the past, now is a great time to try it again to see how you compare to competitors in your industry!

What Is the AdWords Performance Grader?AdWords is a complex system and it can be cumbersome and confusing. Marketers and small business owners we talk to generally want to know how they?re doing compared to other AdWords advertisers, what?s wrong with their accounts, what they can do to improve, and what kind of results they could expect to get if they were successful. In other words, they want an audit of their PPC accounts, plus help with improving their performance. But PPC audits are expensive and time-consuming.

So we built the AdWords Performance Grader as a free tool that advertisers can use to get insight into their account performance. It?s:

Your AdWords performance report is instant and available for free. Really! All you need is an active AdWords account. With a one-time, secure login to your account, you get a complete report that shows you how you?re doing overall and in 9 additional areas:

We also run a quick check to make sure you?re following PPC best practices such as enabling conversion tracking, using language and geo targeting, taking advantage of the modified broad match type and negative keywords, using ad extensions and more.

This tool is great for agencies too ? you can use it for prospecting (to quickly show prospects why they need your help) and for reporting (to quickly show clients how their accounts have improved).

Here?s what it looks like (click the report to enlarge):

You have 25 industries and 273 subcategories to choose from (you can view the full list below). When you run the Grader, you?ll be able to choose your industry before getting your report.

The new Industry Benchmark data compares your account performance in five key areas to the industry average. You get a comparison of your metrics vs. the competition on Google search for the past 90 days. These metrics include:

You?ll quickly be able to see if you?re doing better or worse than the industry average in each of these areas. (If you?re beating the average, your results appear in green. If you?re doing worse than the benchmark, your results appear in red.)

It also includes industry average diagnostics , so you?ll know what?s typical of AdWords advertisers in your industry when it comes to:

Film review ? Wreck-It Ralph (2012) ? Cinema Autopsy

Wreck-It Ralph: Ralph (John C Reilly) and Felix (Jack McBrayer)

Ralph (John C Reilly) and Felix (Jack McBrayer)

Walt Disney Animation Studios have long appropriated and repurposed the narratives and characters from European fairy tales, folklore and myths to make feature films that connect with contemporary audiences and reflect the ideology of the time. Attempting to do something similar with the narrative and characters of computer games is a bold and innovative step, which recognises the importance of games in popular culture. The Walt Disney Pictures films Tron (Steven Lisberger, 1982) and Tron: Legacy (Joseph Kosinski, 2010) previously attempted to transform gaming logic and iconography into narrative cinema, but it is the computer-animation feature Wreck-It Ralph that demonstrates the full potential of the concept. Not only does Wreck-It Ralph successfully adapt the style, characters and narrative of games into a feature fiction film, but it recognises the prevalence of gaming mythology and like the classic Disney fairy tale films, it engages with that mythology to reflect specific values and serve as a morality tale.

The premise of Wreck-It Ralph is that the characters within computer game arcade machines are self-aware and have lives of their own when not being played. Voiced by John C Reilly, Ralph is the disillusioned antagonist in a game titled Fix-It Felix, Jr. Fed up with being typecast as the villain, Ralph sets out to prove that he can be heroic, which leads to adventures briefly in the violent first-person shooter Hero?s Duty and then the cutesy confectionary themed kart racing game Sugar Rush. The first striking thing about Wreck-It Ralph is that it is from a studio known for perpetuating stereotypes and tropes, and it is set inside a medium that is also notorious for its stereotypes and tropes due to the simplicity of many game narratives requiring clearly defined good and bad characters. And yet Wreck-It Ralph signals right at the beginning that it is about a character who is sick of being stereotyped and is intent on subverting the restrictions placed upon him. Not only is Ralph a self-aware computer game character, but he is also a self aware Disney character.

Director Rich Moore has a background directing animated television shows, such as The Simpsons and Futurama, so has some experience working with material that manages to be self-reflexive and satirical while maintaining a broad appeal. Wreck-It Ralph is full of famous computer game characters and generic characters that even the most casual gamer should recognise as belonging to a particular style of game. More impressive is how well Wreck-It Ralph adopts the movements and style of various eras of gaming into the way the characters move and interact with their surroundings. The results not only deliver plenty of fun sight gags, but also effectively flesh out the worlds behind the arcade screens. However, it is the logic of gaming narratives that are most subversively used. For example, Hero?s Duty character Sergeant Tamora Jean Calhoun (voiced wonderfully by Jane Lynch) is revealed to be as aggressive as she is because of the backstory she was programmed with, acknowledging the simplicity and often shallowness in which character motivations, across many different types of media, are often explained and justified.

More interesting is how successfully Wreck-It Ralph represents class and gender. Disney has long celebrated inherited power and wealth for its protagonists while the villains were often members of the lower or working classes who refuse to stay put. Through the tales of royalty and aristocracy, Disney championed a very problematic vision of the world where the ruling class were seen as righteously occupying a place of born-to-rule privilege that should never be undermined. Often a princess character was at the centre of such narratives, and frequently the drama came from her being wrongly denied her birthright. While the princess characters have become more an active participant and less a passive bystander in the last few decades, she still exists as an unobtainable ideal the audience is supposed to side with, despite how such a character defies all notions of equality.

Wreck-It Ralph beautifully undercuts all notions of plutocratic rule. As a character who refuses to adhere to his social status, Ralph is an unusual and unconventional Disney protagonist. As early as the opening scene he comments on the hero of his game Felix Jr (Jack McBrayer) having the good fortune to inherit the magic hammer from his father, introducing the fundamental unfairness in the way things have turned out. And while Felix isn?t portrayed as a villain, he is initially presented a na?ve character who mistakes his good fortune as success he achieved himself.

The moment that Wreck-It Ralph really excels is when it resolves the story involving Vanellope von Schweetz (voiced by Sarah Silverman), a 9-year-old computer glitch and racer in the Sugar Rush game whom Ralph teams up with. Wreck-It Ralph seems to head directly toward the sort of resolution that typifies so many previous Disney films to only undercut itself in such a blatant way that it seems to be overtly acknowledging the Disney legacy of entitled princesses in order to declare it no longer relevant. It?s a wonderful moment.

Perhaps it is no surprise that a Disney film that celebrates outsiders (Ralph the ?villain? and Vanellope the ?glitch?) over social cohesion should contain a variation of a character from Alice in Wonderland (Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson and Hamilton Luske, 1951), the most anarchic and unconventional of the classic Disney animated feature films. In Wreck-It Ralph the main setting is ruled as a monarchy by King Candy. He is the tyrant of Sugar Rush who not only looks like the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, but is voiced by Alan Tudyk to sound just like the Mad Hatter voice actor Ed Wynn. Linking to?Alice in Wonderland in this way is?yet another touch that suggests the extent in which Disney may have acknowledged and then shaken off its previous regressive values.

With Wreck-It Ralph Walt Disney Animation Studios demonstrates that it can deliver a self-acceptance message along with a fun spectacle, without indulging in antiquated born-to-rule scenarios or princess tropes. The voice cast is uniformly excellent and it?s difficult to think of another recent animation where the leads have been as perfectly voiced ? Reilly, Silverman, McBrayer and Lynch are exceptional. The writing and narrative structure recalls the best Pixar films, where no story element is superfluous. Scenes that seem like fun diversions during earlier parts of the film are recalled later to tie everything together without ever feeling contrived. Wreck-It Ralph is a major advancement for Walt Disney Animation Studios in all regards.

The Halifax Commoner ? Beer no longer just a ? poor man's? drink

Beer expert, Adam Pearson says IPA beer goes great with spicy Indian food. (Photo: Julian Brown)

?By Julian Brown

juliancavanghbrown@gmail.com

Grilling steaks? Drop the Shiraz and pick up a porter. Salmon on tonight?s menu? Why not go for a Belgian wheat beer instead of a Chardonnay.

If you?re looking for a fine wine to pair with your dinner tonight, forget it. Haligonians in the know are now looking to beer to pair with their favourite meals.

?Beer is actually a better food pairing than wine, generally speaking. You have so many more ingredients to work with,? says Greg Hutchinson, the man in charge of beer selection at Premier Wine & Spirits inside the City Atlantic Centre on Dresden Row. ? The cultural standards that equate wine on the table with gourmet food and beer in a cooler with a tail gate party are quickly vanishing.

This perception that wine has higher status than beer likely comes from centuries of drinking behavior, says Hutchinson.

?Beer has always been the poor man?s drink, the lowly
commoner, workingman?s kind of thing. Whereas wine has got the big, highfalutin? status.?

?It?s definitely changing, the craft beer scene has a lot of momentum behind it.?

Microbreweries and brewpubs have been sprouting up all over North America since the 1980s. This new wave of brewers are pushing aside the mass-produced lagers in favour of more creative beer with a wider range of flavours.

Over the past nine years, Hutchinson has built his beer selection into one of the best in the country.

Premium imports from Europe, the a bunch of craft beer coming out of North America and some selections from Asia complete a selection you can?t find anywhere else in town.? It is selection and quality such as this that makes pairing food with beer possible.

In the late ?90s, Halifax finally got two local craft-brew options with the establishment of the Propeller and Garrison breweries. Both are now wildly popular and have developed a variety of food-friendly beers.

Adam Pearson, retail and events manager at Garrison Brewery and a self-titled ?local food ambassador? also prefers beer with his meals.

?When it comes down to it, to appreciate the subtleties of wine you really need an advanced palate,? said Pearson.

?With beer, there are so many kinds and there is so much you can do with each variety.?

Pearson says the association with wine, fine dining and class may come from the perception that traditions that stem from the Mediterranean coasts of Spain, Italy and France are considered fancy.

Ironically, Pearson notes, some of the best beer comes from those countries.

One of Pearson?s favourite brews is the India Pale Ale, a hugely popular beer made with lots of hops.

IPAs and their strong distinct flavours largely define the American craft beer movement.

He explains that it?s distinctively hoppy taste came about through bumping the alcohol content and adding additional hops for preservation so that the beer wouldn?t spoil on it?s way to India to be enjoyed by thirsty British Imperial soldiers.

Ironically, Pearson says, that an IPA goes best with Indian food. ? ?That citric, crisp bitterness just cuts right through the spice.? ? ?Having a screaming hot plate of vindaloo and a Garrison Imperial IPA next to it, probably two of my favourite things that go together,? said Pearson.

Beef and beer is another combination Pearson raves about, pointing out the classic Irish steak and Guinness pie and his homemade beer-braised short ribs recipe.

Despite the long-standing notion that steak is best enjoyed with red wine, Pearson says ?rules are meant to be broken.?

But what about Christmas dinner? Sticking with beer instead of going for wine at a turkey feast has long been considered a sign of immaturity in some households.

For beer pros, the decision is simple.

?I?ll be drinking spruce beer,? says Pearson. Garrison brews a spruce beer every winter and this year it comes out on Dec. 14.

?A saison (a strong, flavourful farmhouse beer) is always my go to,? said Hutchinson as he suggests a large corked bottle of Avec les Bons Voeux (in English: ?with best wishes?) from the Dupont Brewery in Belgium.

The Reasons Why We Plan For Self Improvement - Inspirational Bites

Self Improvement is a journey that we can take throughout our lives in order to achieve happiness and become the best that we can be. It is something that can make us better persons and help us attain our dreams and aspirations. Self development is not something that can be reached by just doing small things. It involves positive changes, which would bring us closer and closer to the kind of life that we want to live. To do that, it is necessary for us to come up with a plan for self improvement, and it is best if we constantly remind ourselves of the reasons why we want to do that.

First and foremost, when it comes to building your plan for self improvement, it should be written down on a piece of paper or a journal. It should be done this way so that you can refer to it from time to time, and remind yourself of the things that you need to do in order to achieve the things that you long for. With that, it is also necessary to situate the plan where you can have easy access to it or to take a glance each day, so that you can continuously take steps that are indicated in it.

Coming up with a plan for self improvement is needed, since it would serve as your map in taking the right path towards success and happiness in life. It would also show you where you are now in terms of the goals that you want to reach. After coming up with a plan for self development you can have peace of mind, knowing that you have taken the first step in gaining control of your life. Aside from that, you would also feel good and motivated because you already have a clear idea of what steps you have to take so that you can reach your dreams.

Upon creating your plan, one of the things that you have to do is to identify your strengths and weaknesses. In doing this, you would be able to know yourself better and identify the things that you have to do to reach your full potential. When you know your strengths, it is very important that you take advantage of them and put them into good use as they give you the ability to achieve your goals. On the other hand, when you know your own weaknesses, then you can determine the things that you can do in order to overcome them or even make them your strengths.

Self-assessment is a big part of making your own self improvement plan, and by recalling your achievements as well as identifying your skills and talents, it would make you more confident in tackling any kind of obstacles that would come your way.

Self improvement can be achieved with careful planning, discipline, determination, perseverance, and hard work. Without a plan, you only have a vague idea on what steps you have to take in order to accomplish it. Moreover, planning is also the time when you identify your goals, and become more aware of where you are today in terms of achieving them.

Animal Friends Kicks Off 'Pets Are Priceless' Campaign ? CBS ...

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ? If you?re thinking about adding a new pet to your family, now may be a good time.

Animal Friends just kicked off its ?Pets Are Priceless? campaign.

Pets can make the holidays even more special for your family and if you?re considering a new one consider adopting from a shelter.

?Adopting from a shelter is a life-saving option. These pets have done nothing wrong. They are unwanted simply because they have nowhere else to go,? Jolene Miklas from Animal Friends said.

There are plenty of pets in need of good homes at Animal Friends on Camp Horne Road in Ohio Township. The shelter is filled to capacity with 250 pets on site.

There are also animals in foster homes.

Now, you can take home one of those dogs, cats, or rabbits without paying the $75 adoption fee.

?The Priceless Pets promotion applies to pets 2 and up and that?s because we want to shine the light on those animals who are more frequently overlooked. We think the pets that are a little older have more experience, are great companions, usually a little bit more trained, more calm and ready to move in and be a family member,? Miklas said.

One of the animals move-in ready is a 2-year-old pit bull mix named Andrew.

?He is one of the nicest dogs and one of the biggest personalities that we?ve seen at the shelter. He is just so easy going, laid back, very friendly, loves absolutely everybody he has ever met,? Hannah Ketterman said.

If you?re interested in Andrew or another pet, contact Animal Friends or visit their website here: http://www.thinkingoutsidethecage.org/site/PageServer

The Priceless Pets promotion runs through Dec. 31.

Unemployment Benefits, Payroll Tax Cut Really at ... - Yahoo! Finance

In recent months, consumer confidence has risen as the unemployment rate has come down and the housing recovery builds momentum. This weekend's strong start to the holiday shopping season is another sign of an economy that's doing much better than feared.

Related: Black Friday Weekend by the Numbers

But the recession never ended for millions of Americans and many of them now face a frightening prospect: the loss of unemployment benefits.

"More than 40% of the nearly five million Americans who receive unemployment insurance are set to lose those benefits if federal programs expire as scheduled at year-end," The WSJ reports. "Already this year, hundreds of thousands of people have exhausted their jobless benefits. Now, virtually everyone left in the federal programs would lose their benefits if the programs expire as scheduled at year-end."

The roughly 2.1 million Americans at risk are currently receiving benefits through federally backed programs that Congress approved starting in 2008. Those programs, designed to extend benefits beyond the six-month time frame typically offered by states, are now set to expire.

Addressing this issue raises many complex issues, as Henry and I discuss in the accompanying clip. Anecdotal evidence suggests that long-term unemployment benefits have proven to be a disincentive for some Americans to find work, which obviously isn't a desired outcome. On the other hand, eliminating those benefits would put millions of Americans at risk of falling into the depths of poverty, which isn't good for society at large.

One potential solution: requiring people receiving unemployment benefits to do something to earn it, depending on their skills and physical capabilities. Whether collecting garbage on highways or visiting nursing homes or working on infrastructure projects, there are plenty of things people can do to make a positive contribution in exchange for maintaining their unemployment benefits.

At this point, there seems to be very little discussion about this issue ? or the broader issue of infrastructure spending ? in the ongoing debate about the fiscal cliff.

In a separate but related development, the temporary 2% payroll tax cut is also set to expire on Dec. 31. As of now, it appears the payroll tax cut will be allowed to expire, raising taxes by $1,040 a year for an average family of four earning $50,000.

Related: Here's Why Your Taxes Are Going Up 2% Next Year: Just Explain It

As with unemployment benefits, this issue appears to have been lost in the fiscal cliff discussions, which seems to have become fixated on individual tax rates.

Alarming 15-fold increase in inflatable bouncer-related injuries among children

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A new study by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital examined pediatric injuries associated with inflatable bouncers, such as bounce houses and moonwalks. Researchers found that from 1995 to 2010 there was a 15-fold increase in the number of inflatable bouncer-related injuries that were treated in U.S. emergency departments among children younger than 18 years of age. In 2010 alone, more than 30 children per day, or about one child every 45 minutes, were treated in hospital emergency departments for injuries associated with inflatable bouncers.

The study, available online November 26, 2012 and published in the December 2012 print issue of Pediatrics, found that while fractures (28 percent) and strains or sprains (27 percent) were the most common types of injuries, approximately 1 in 5 injuries (19 percent) were to the head and neck, demonstrating that use of these products can pose serious risks. Falls (43 percent) were the most common cause of injury followed by stunts and collisions. The majority of the injuries occurred either in a recreational setting (44 percent) or at home (38 percent).

"The findings from this study show that there has been an alarming increase in the number of injuries from inflatable bouncers," said Gary A. Smith, MD, DrPH director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital. "It is time for us to take action to prevent these injuries. Ensuring that parents are aware of the potential risks, improving surveillance of the injuries, developing national safety guidelines and improving bouncer design are the first steps."

The study authors point out that the injury patterns for inflatable bouncers and trampolines are very similar, and although there are national safety guidelines for trampoline use, no such guidelines exist for inflatable bouncers.

"The medical and public health community has yet to provide recommendations on the safe use of inflatable bouncers," said Dr. Smith, also a professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. "The growing epidemic of inflatable bouncer injuries make it clear that it is time to do so."

Until national safety guidelines are in place, parents should consider the risks before allowing their child to use an inflatable bouncer. If parents allow their child to use an inflatable bouncer, they should consider limiting use to children 6 years of age and older, requiring that an adult be present to supervise while the bouncer is in use and allowing only one child on the bouncer at a time. If more than one child will be on the bouncer at the same time, the children should be approximately of the same age and size.

This is the first study to use a nationally representative sample to examine injuries associated with inflatable bouncer-related injuries that were treated in U.S. emergency departments. Data for this study were obtained from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), which is operated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The NEISS provides information on consumer product-related and sports and recreation-related injuries treated in hospital emergency departments across the country.

Facebook not so fun with a click from boss or mum

LONDON (Reuters) - Posting pictures of yourself plastered at a party and talking trash online with your Facebook friends may be more stress than it's worth now that your boss and mum want to see it all.

A survey from Edinburgh Business School released on Monday showed Facebook users are anxious that all those self-published sins may be coming home to roost with more than half of employers claiming to have used Facebook to weed out job candidates.

"Facebook used to be like a great party for all your friends where you can dance, drink and flirt," said Ben Marder, author of the report and fellow in marketing at the Business School.

"But now with your Mum, Dad and boss there, the party becomes an anxious event full of potential social landmines."

On average, people are Facebook friends with seven different social circles, the report found, with real friends known to the user offline the most common.

More than four-fifths of users add extended family on Facebook, a similar number add siblings. Less than 70 percent are connected to friends of friends while more than 60 percent added their colleagues online, despite the anxiety this may cause.

Facebook has settings to control the information seen by different types of friends, but only one third use them, the report said.

"I'm not worried at all because all the really messy pics - me, drunken or worse - I detag straight away," said Chris from London, aged 30.

People were more commonly friends with former boyfriends or girlfriends than with current ones, the report also found.

Mastering E-mail Marketing Techniques With These ... - Businesses

Have you ever thought about getting into email marketing yet you aren?t sure where you want to start? If you are seeking how to make a great campaign, then look no further. Read the following paragraphs thoroughly to discern techniques you can use to master email marketing.

Do not send marketing emails to those who have not requested them. When you send out your emails to everyone, many people will mark them as spam. This will convey a bad image for your business and your IP address will be blocked if a lot of people complain about your emails, which means no one will receive your emails.

Make sure that the grammar, spelling, and sentence structure of any email you send is 100% correct. It may seem like an obvious thing to do, but sometimes people forget to do it. An email is a causal mode of communication, right? You are wrong. Every e-mail you send is a direct reflection of your business.

TIP! Come up with a sales list that is targeted very well. To do this, you must convince your best customers, as well as their friends and contacts, to join your mailing list.

Remember that more and more people are now using a smartphone or another type of mobile device to view emails. These types of devices don?t have as much resolution as computer monitors; therefore, you won?t have as much space that you can work with. Figure out what your restrictions are and then work within them.

An email subscription form should provide subscribers with information about what they will receive. Make them aware of the exact type of emails you will be sending out, and how regularly you will send them. This remove the element of surprise for your new subscribers when it comes to the frequency or content of your emails.

Make sure that your email uses an attention-grabbing subject line. Using an incentive in your subject line will increase the likelihood of your email being opened. This promotion could be any number of things, but the most common such offers are free or discounted products, especially those offered only to list subscribers. A well thought out subject line increases that likelihood of your email being opened immensely.

TIP! Make your marketing campaigns mesh with special events and holidays. Plan out your entire year.

It is important to make your emails as personal as possible. If they see your message as a form letter, it will be deleted and you will be blocked. As easy as it is to add in their name, go even further. The information you collect at the time of signup should include the location from which they signed up, as well as the reason they signed up. Utilize this information within your messages.

You can create a successful campaign if you utilize the suggestions you have just read. Well designed email promoting can increase your customer base and heighten your sales. All you have to do is get started!

The Oscar race now officially includes?Les Mis?rables and Zero Dark Thirty ? which shouldn?t come as a huge shock, seeing how the former is an adaptation of producer Cameron Mackintosh?s award-winning Broadway smash from director Tom Hooper (The King?s Speech). Meanwhile, the latter is a drama/thriller about the hunt for Osama bin Laden from Oscar-winning Hurt Locker?screenwriter and director duo, Mark Boal and Kathryn Bigelow.

Nonetheless, both films had their first public screenings over the Thanksgiving holiday frame and drew unadulterated praise from those in attendance. Read on for our breakdown of what the general consensus is for both titles? so far.

Hooper?s Les Miz has long been regarded as something special, seeing how trailer footage suggests it infuses Mackintosh?s original pop musical with a stripped-down aesthetic that helps ground the flamboyant proceedings (unlike Joel Schumacher?s Phantom of the Opera or Rob Marshall?s Nine, to name a few examples). Moreover, the cast boasts heralded actors with?professional singing experience;?that?s in opposition to some of the recent movie musicals that?ve relied on either name-actor casts (Mamma Mia!) or Broadway veterans (Rent).

Reviews for Les Miz are embargoed for the time being, but Indiewire has rounded up Twitter reactions from several critics and film journalists who were at the first open showing. Here?s a bullet-point summary of the responses:

  • Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean could land his first Best Actor Oscar nod.
  • Anne Hathaway as Fantine is a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination.
  • Eddie Redmayne as Marius turns in a solid supporting performance.
  • Russell Crowe takes a ?Jesus Christ Superstar rock-opera? approach that distinguishes Inspector Javert (but may not be to everyone?s taste).
  • The film as a whole is a ?tour de force? and ?tearjerker? that seems destined to become a Best Picture nominee.

German research points way to faster flu vaccines

LONDON (Reuters) - An experimental vaccine based on a molecule related to DNA protects animals against influenza and may one day offer an ultra-rapid way to develop new shots for humans, German scientists reported on Sunday.

Assuming it also works in people, the new approach could allow commercial flu vaccines to be designed and manufactured in weeks rather than months.

Making vaccines quickly is critical in fighting flu, particularly during a pandemic when health authorities and drugmakers are in a race to keep up with mutating strains of virus.

Flu vaccines have traditionally been produced in chicken eggs, a tricky and lengthy process. More recently some firms have started using animal cell cultures, with Novartis on November 20 winning the first U.S. approval for such a product.

Both approaches, however, still involve virus cultivation, which can result in variable yields and production delays.

The new vaccine developed by Lothar Stitz of Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut and colleagues uses a quicker approach. It is made solely of messenger RNA (mRNA) - a single-stranded molecule that carries information telling cells which proteins to make.

"The only thing we need is the sequence of the relevant genes," Stitz said. "It's a new option and it doesn't take long to do."

His team vaccinated mice, ferrets and pigs with an mRNA vaccine and found that the immune response was similar or better than that found with conventional vaccines. What is more, the new vaccines showed high efficacy in very young and very old animals, which can be a problem with current flu shots.

Reporting their results in the journal Nature Biotechnology, the scientists calculated that a completed vaccine could be produced within six to eight weeks of the genetic code of a flu virus strain being published.

In contrast growing vaccines in fertilised chicken eggs can take up to six months, while using cell cultures may reduce that by up to eight to 10 weeks.

Another potential advantage of mRNA vaccines is the fact that they do not need to be refrigerated.

A human vaccine based on the research is still years away, since extensive clinical trials will be needed to test safety and efficacy, and the job of taking the work forward now rests with CureVac, a privately owned biotech company.

CureVac, backed by billionaire German investor and business software firm SAP's co-founder Dietmar Hopp, is already developing a therapeutic mRNA vaccine for prostate cancer in human trials.

The firm also has a vaccine for lung cancer in development and is working on prophylactic vaccines against several unnamed infectious diseases in a collaboration with Sanofi.

Sanofi is a major supplier of flu vaccines, along with Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline.

A.I. Advances Through Deep Learning

An anonymous reader sends this excerpt from the NY Times:
"Advances in an artificial intelligence technology that can recognize patterns offer the possibility of machines that perform human activities like seeing, listening and thinking. ... But what is new in recent months is the growing speed and accuracy of deep-learning programs, often called artificial neural networks or just 'neural nets' for their resemblance to the neural connections in the brain. 'There has been a number of stunning new results with deep-learning methods,' said Yann LeCun, a computer scientist at New York University who did pioneering research in handwriting recognition at Bell Laboratories. 'The kind of jump we are seeing in the accuracy of these systems is very rare indeed.' Artificial intelligence researchers are acutely aware of the dangers of being overly optimistic. ... But recent achievements have impressed a wide spectrum of computer experts. In October, for example, a team of graduate students studying with the University of Toronto computer scientist Geoffrey E. Hinton won the top prize in a contest sponsored by Merck to design software to help find molecules that might lead to new drugs. From a data set describing the chemical structure of 15 different molecules, they used deep-learning software to determine which molecule was most likely to be an effective drug agent."

How to set alarms and timers using Siri

Complete guide to Siri commands for alarms, timers, and the clock

Siri ties right into the iOS Clock app on your iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad 4, iPad mini, and iPod touch 5, which means if you want to be woken up at 7am, have a timer set for 10 minutes so the cookies don't burn, or find out what the hour is in Australia before you call, Siri can keep you alerted and on time.

How to set an alarm with Siri

Siri can set alarms quickly and easily.

  1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Tell Siri to set an alarm, along with the time. For example: "Set an alarm for 8pm", "Set an alarm for 5 minutes from now", "wake me up at 9am".

Siri will display the alarm widget on the screen. If you change your mind about the alarm, you can simply toggle it to "off". You can also tap the widget to be taken to the Clock app.

Note: Siri can?t set an alarm for more than one day in advance. If you try to use Siri to set an alarm further in advance, you'll be asked if you want to set a Reminder instead.

How to set a repeating alarm with Siri

If you want an alarm to repeat, for example, to wake you up at the same time every day, Siri can set that up for you as well.

  1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Tell Siri to set an alarm, along with the time. For example: "Set an alarm for 6pm every weekday" or "wake me up at 9am ever day".

When Siri displays the alarm widget, the repetition interval is show about the on/off toggle switch.

How to show current alarms with Siri

Over time, you may lose track of all the alarms you've set, especially inactive ones. Siri can show you list of all alarms, and their current status -- on or off.

  1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Tell Siri to: "Show all alarms".

You can quickly toggle any of the alarms shown from on to off or vice versa, or ask Siri to change or delete them. (See below.)

How to change an alarm with Siri

If you set an alarm, but later need to change it, Siri can handle that for you as well.

  1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Tell Siri which alarm you want to change, and what time you want to change it to. For example: "Change my 9am alarm to 9:30am."

How to turn off alarms with Siri

Nights get late, meetings get canceled, and plans change. If you no longer need an alarm, you can ask Siri to turn it off.

  1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Tell Siri which alarm you want to turn off. For example: "Turn off my 8am alarm" or even "turn off all alarms."

Note: Turning off is different than canceling or deleting. When you turn an alarm off, it remains available for you to quickly turn back on at any time, even manually. When you cancel or delete an alarm, it's gone completely and needs to be recreated if you ever want to use it again.

How to cancel alarms with Siri

When turning off alarms isn't enough, and you want them completely gone from your Clock system entirely, Siri a fast way to delete a specific alarm, and an incredibly fast way to delete all of them.

  1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Tell Siri which alarm you want to cancel. For example: "Cancel my 9:30am alarm" or go for the nuclear option and "cancel all alarms".

How to set a timer with Siri

Since the Clock app can set timers as well as alarms, Siri can set timers as well as alarms. Whether you're waiting for your cookies to bake, or your next set of circuit training to begin, Siri can make sure you always alerted at exactly the right time.

  1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Tell Siri to set the timer, and for how long. For example: "Set a timer for 10 minutes".

The Timer widget will remain visible on your screen until the timer goes off, or you leave Siri. Tap the timer widget to launch the Clock app and access the manual controls.

Note: Siri can only run one timer at a time. If you try to set another, Siri will ask you if you want to keep the current one or change to the new one. (See below.)

How to show, stop, or re-start a timer with Siri

If Siri is no longer displaying your timer, you can easily ask it to show you the timer again, and to pause/stop or start it whenever you like.

  1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Tell Siri what you want to do with the current time. For example: "Show timer", "stop timer", "start timer".

How to change a timer with Siri

Siri can also change the duration of a timer, if you need to increase or decrease the length for any reason.

  1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Tell Siri to change the timer. For example: "Change timer to 5 minutes".

How to find out the time with Siri

What if you need to know the time in Cupertino, California so you don't miss that Apple keynote? Or you want to find out the time in Rome, Italy, so you don't wake up nono too early? Just ask Siri.

  1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Ask Siri the time in any location around the world. For example: "What's the time in Rome, Italy?"

Tap the clock widget to go to the Clock app for more options.

How to get more help with Siri

How to set alarms and timers using Siri

If you still need help with setting up or using Siri with your iPhone Contacts, or any other Siri feature, head on over to our Siri Forum and ask away!
