Bosnia raids homes after embassy attack

Special police units raided homes Saturday in a Bosnian village linked to the gunman who fired an automatic weapon at the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo in what authorities called a terrorist attack. The raids came as 17 suspected associates of the shooter, all said to be members of the ultraconservative Wahhabi Muslim sect, were briefly detained in Serbia.

A convoy of police vehicles entered the isolated northern village of Gornja Maoca, known to be inhabited by many Wahhabis, and officers wearing black masks and camouflage uniforms surrounded several houses, according to an Associated Press video. The reporter saw the security forces enter some homes before officers asked him to leave.

The gunman, identified by police as 23-year-old Mevlid Jasarevic, is accused of shooting at the embassy building in Sarajevo for at least 30 minutes Friday, wounding a policeman guarding the facility, before a police sniper immobilized him with a shot in his leg.

An amateur video obtained by the AP shows what appears to be Jasarevic roaming a deserted intersection, waving his gun and occasionally turning toward the embassy building, shooting at the fence and facade. Another video caught him dropping on the ground after the sniper shot him.

Jasarevic is believed to be a follower of the Wahhabi sect, and police said he visited Gornja Maoca several times this and last year. Both the gunman and the police officer were hospitalized and their wounds weren't considered to be life-threatening, authorities said.

Bosnian and Serbian police have coordinated the response to the embassy attack, and the raids in Bosnia on Saturday were part of a joint operation. The village appeared blocked with police setting up checkpoints, stopping cars and searching them.

Police were searching several locations in Bosnia and questioning people, State Prosecutor Dubravko Campara said.

"We are cooperating with colleagues in Serbia, working with them and the U.S. Embassy," he said.

Houses searched, items confiscated
In Serbia, police said in a statement that as part of the detentions of suspects, some 18 houses were searched and computers and mobile phones confiscated. The 17 people held were later released after questioning, police said.

Wahhabism is a very conservative branch of Islam that is rooted in Saudi Arabia and linked to religious militants in parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Police raided Gornja Maoca in February 2010 because its residents were accused of posing a security threat in Bosnia by promoting racial and religious hatred and illegally possessing weapons.

Many Bosnian Muslims are extremely protective of their relations with the U.S. because it was the driving force behind NATO military intervention against the Serbs during the 1992-95 war and brokered a peace agreement that ended the conflict.

Furious callers on live radio shows suggested the Wahhabi movement should be banned and its members expelled.

"Here I am searching the newspapers every morning looking for news about foreign investments so this place can move forward and then an idiot like this comes and destroys everything. It will take years for us to wash this," cab driver Ismet Besic said.

"It looks as if he was just waiting for cameras to show up, to be seen all over the world," Nermin Muftic, 38, said watching videos of the shooter on YouTube on his mobile phone with his friends during morning coffee.

"He just wanted to pull this show and hurt Bosnia. Who knows what people in the world think of us now," he said.

Islamist extremists joined Bosnia's 1992-95 war for independence. They were largely tolerated by the U.S. and the West because of their opposition to late Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic's quest to create "Greater Serbia" out of the former Yugoslav republics.

Bosnian intelligence officials have said last year that at least 3,000 Wahhabis live in Bosnia.

Bakir Izetbegovic, one of Bosnia's three presidents, issued a statement Friday condemning "the terrorist attack on the embassy of the United States."

"The United States is a proven friend of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Its government and its people supported us in the most difficult moments in our history and nobody has the right to jeopardize our relations," he said.

U.S. Ambassador to Bosnia Patrick Moon told reporters "this is a regrettable incident," and that his country has full confidence in Bosnian police and judicial authorities. He pledged "full cooperation" in the investigation, adding that an FBI team will arrive in Bosnia to assess the damage to the embassy.

Google+ expands to Gapps

Google+

Finally, Google has opened up Google+ to Gapps users. That means if your sole Google account (and we do realize there are some of you out there) is run through Google Apps, you can now use that account for Google+. You'll have the same features as everyone else, and the ability to share with everyone on your domain, even if you haven't added them all to a circle. Very cool.

Human Population Reaches 7 Billion—How Did This Happen and Can It Go On?

Features | Energy & Sustainability

A mere 12 years after surmounting six billion, the world's population will reach seven billion, according to the U.N. But that rate seems to be slowing

Supplemental Material

  • MP3 file Audio How Many People Can Earth Hold? Well...

On October 31, 2011, a particularly special person will be born?the seven billionth human alive, according to United Nations demographers. He or she could be delivered by a starving mother in the growing wastelands of Somalia, a failed-state gripped by famine and war. The best odds are that the child will be born in India, which has the highest rate of births per minute in the world. She may even be an American girl, heiress to a complex legacy that is in no small part responsible for the fact that, for better or worse, people are shaping the destiny of the planet that engendered humanity.

Regardless, the seven billionth person raises the question: How much is too much? "Can Earth support seven billion or nine billion or 10 billion people in a good life for a long time?" asked demographer Joel Cohen of Columbia University's Earth Institute at its human population event on October 17. "The addition of four billion people in five decades has no precedent. That is an exceptional event and will probably never be repeated within human history."

There were only one billion people on the planet as recently as the turn of the 19th century and only a few hundred thousand just 10,000 years ago. In fact, there may have been as few as 15,000 of us, roughly 70,000 years ago.

With both more people and longer lifetimes, humanity's absolute numbers continue to rise, even though the number of children per women has halved since 1950. In fact, the absolute growth rate in human population peaked at 2.1 percent between 1965 and 1970, according to Cohen. "We're now down to 1.1 percent per year," he said, although that still means roughly 150 babies born every minute.

Consumers
The world's richest 500 million people produce half the world's carbon dioxide emissions?the primary greenhouse gas responsible for climate change?whereas the poorest three billion emit just seven percent. The average American?one of 312.5 million?uses up some 88 kilograms of stuff daily: food, water, plastics, metals and other material goods. Americans consume a full 25 percent of the world's energy despite representing just 5 percent of global population, and the band of industrialized nations combine to waste 222 million metric tons of food per year, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.

"Population doubled while the economy grew by 15 times, cars by 16 times and fertilizer-use by sixfold," said geographer Ruth DeFries of Columbia at the same event. "There is no end in sight for that increase in consumption," particularly as it is emulated by people around the globe.

All this consumption requires a host of natural resources, from vast copper mines scarring the landscape to ever more land for food. More acreage was converted to growing crops between 1950 and 1980, than from 1700 to 1850, and arable land is one of nine "planetary boundaries" that scientists have identified?limits past which humanity should fear to tread. The others include: climate change, biodiversity loss, nutrient cycles, ocean acidification and freshwater use, among others. "Slowing population growth does not solve all the problems but it makes it easier by slowing demands," Cohen said.

'Trek' co-star Yelchin finds love in 'Like Crazy' (AP)

TORONTO ? The art of improvising is what grabbed Anton Yelchin as a boy in his first acting class. He gets back to improv in his latest film, "Like Crazy," a rare drama whose dialogue was made up by the actors as they went along.

Yelchin, known for a string of acclaimed performances in independent films, along with his role as navigator Chekov in the new incarnation of "Star Trek," found that making things up came to him naturally when he started to study acting.

"I loved the improvisation part of it the most, because it was a lot like just playing around with stuff," Yelchin, 22, said in an interview at September's Toronto International Film Festival, where "Like Crazy" played ahead of its theatrical debut Friday. "There was something about it that I just felt completely comfortable doing and happy doing.

"My parents were like, OK, our kid is happy doing this. This is great. They were figure skaters and grew up going to school and skating, so for them, a person needs to have things to do. They don't just sit around the house watching TV."

Before long, people were watching child actor Yelchin on TV and then his breakout big-screen role opposite Anthony Hopkins in 2001's "Hearts in Atlantis."

Yelchin's career over the past decade would be the ideal of almost any child actor trying to make the transition to adult roles. His credits include impressive parts in such indie films as "Alpha Dog," "Fierce People" and "Charlie Bartlett," along with a role in the short-lived TV series "Huff."

The last two years alone, Yelchin's resume ranges from "Star Trek" and another huge sci-fi franchise with "Terminator: Salvation" to the vampire romp "Fright Night" and a voice role in "The Smurfs" to personal stories such as Mel Gibson's "The Beaver" and "Like Crazy," which earned the top prize at last winter's Sundance Film Festival.

"What's great about him is he can do anything. He's a chameleon. He can do bigger movies or smaller, more intimate ones," said "Like Crazy" director Drake Doremus. "There are a lot of people who can't, who can only do one or the other. And he's only 22 years old. That's what blows my mind."

In "Like Crazy," Yelchin stars as Jacob, an aspiring furniture designer in southern California who falls into a passionate romance with Anna (Felicity Jones), a Londoner studying at the same college.

The two are an ideal match, but they're forced apart after Anna overstays her student visa and is unable to return to the United States. Years of on-again, off-again long-distance romance follow with Jacob's occasional visits to London. The two take up with other lovers and build professional lives 6,000 miles apart, all the while trying to figure out how to reunite for good ? and whether they'll still be suited for one another if they do.

Aiming for authenticity, Doremus and his co-writer prepared detailed back stories on the characters but did not do a conventional screenplay, leaving the dialogue to develop naturally among the actors through a week of rehearsal and improvisation during the monthlong shoot.

Jones had seen none of Yelchin's previous work before, and she was glad for that once they began filming.

"For this type of film, I didn't want to have too many preconceptions about him, and so as I'm meeting him as Felicity, so are Anna and Jacob just getting to know each other. We didn't even meet before we were cast," Jones said. "So it felt we as the actors were going on a journey as the characters were."

The result is a heartbreaking chronicle of stymied love filled with moments of raw honesty that are very specific to the characters, yet represent emotions universal to relationships.

"Even I could relate to it, watching it myself," Yelchin said. "I remember with my ex-girlfriend, when we broke up, you remember the first time you slept together, you remember the first drink you had together. You remember the dinners you had, seeing your first movie together.

"You remember everything and it's just perfect, and you look at yourself now, and you look at the other person now, and they're just not there anymore. There's all this baggage and weight on this relationship, and if it's at the point where it's about to crumble; it's just like a different universe that you're in. The movie has so many of those moments that ring true to people."

Yelchin stars as a clairvoyant short-order cook in the upcoming Dean Koontz adaptation "Odd Thomas," and he's preparing to reprise his role as Chekov in a "Star Trek" sequel.

"What, when and where, I have no idea. They pretty much keep you in the dark until it's time to make the movie," Yelchin said. "Whatever it may be, I'm looking forward to being with those guys again."

Yelchin shares Russian ancestry with "Star Trek" counterpart Chekov. The actor was born in Russia, where his parents were skaters before coming to the United States when their son was an infant.

He had a brief flirtation with skating lessons himself before moving on to acting class.

"They were very quick to understand that I wasn't very good at it," Yelchin said. "And they weren't going to make me do it if I wasn't good, so it automatically reverted to me being a doctor or lawyer. Because, we're Russian Jews, so naturally, what does your kid do? He goes to law school or he goes to med school."

He said it took his father a little time to accept his career choice. "He still wanted me to apply to college and stuff, and I did. But this is what I wanted," Yelchin said.

Visitors ride 3-story slide at NYC museum

"Museum visit" takes on a whole new meaning at the New Museum in New York where visitors can ride a three-story slide that winds through the building or jump into a salty pool ? in the buff ? for an out-of-body experience.

The "Experience" exhibit features the creations of German artist Carsten Holler (pronounced HOO-ler). It opened Wednesday and runs through Jan. 15, allowing visitors to explore different sensations through Holler's odd interactive works of art.

The exhibit may be a first for museumgoers and for a museum. Visitors are asked to sign a waiver and are given helmets and elbow pads for the slide.

Slides are Holler's signature installations, and the 102-foot-chute at the New Museum is the only one he has created that cuts through a building's interior.

The slide is "a non-surprising environment, completely predictable," Holler says. "Yet when you put yourself in it, you have to let go, losing control. You have no means of mastering the situation.

"I'm proposing to look at the world, at what other experiences you can have, how you can experience your whole outside environment outside your body," Holler says.

At a Tuesday preview, squeals and laughter came from visitors shooting out of the slide.

"Viewing the third and second floors while descending past in a slide was perhaps the most innovative way I have ever experienced an art exhibit," said Leslie Grandy, a human resources professional from Diamond Bar, Calif.

Other playful pieces in the exhibit include a giant foam dolphin and hippopotamus; monumental, brightly painted mushroom sculptures; and a slowly turning Mirror Carousel with flashing lights.

Six people can fit in the 2-foot-deep "Psycho Tank." The pool sits off the ground in a tent-like structure, affording privacy. Visitors are handed spa-like bathrobes, slippers and towels before disrobing or donning their own bathing suits.

Roni Weiss, 28, a social media consultant from Harlem, got into the pool with three other people.

"For me, it was more the naked thing than floating," Weiss said. "It was interesting to have conversations with other naked people."

The entire exhibit can be experienced through upside-down goggles. But be forewarned: It can be dizzying.

Apache Just Got Even More Promising (The Motley Fool)

The oil fields of Australia have been in the news recently, with big players showing plenty of interest and making investments. The latest addition to that list of investors is Apache (NYSE: APA - News). Apache has recently declared that it will start development of the Balnaves oil field offshore Western Australia.

The interest
Balnaves is located in the Triassic Mungaroo formation adjacent to the Brunello gas field. Apache discovered the oil field in 2009 during exploration and drilling in the Julimar-Brunello complex. The first production from the oil field is scheduled in 2014. The gross peak production is expected to be about 30,000 barrels of oil per day. The reserves of the oil field are estimated to be around 17 million barrels of oil and 30 billion cubic feet of gas. Apache has also agreed to lease floating production storage and offloading from Bumi Armada.

The prospect
Lots of companies are investing in the Australian oil fields which are rich in oil and gas reserves. This is Apache's third oil development project since 2007, and it is poised to make Apache one of Australia's leading oil producers. Apache also has a presence in the Wheatstone project in Western Australia with Chevron (NYSE: CVX - News), Shell (NYSE: RDS-A - News), and Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company.

The demand for oil and natural gas in developing economies like India and China has been increasing with the expansion of their cities and industries. China, Asia, and Middle East together are expected to generate almost 95% of net growth in the oil sector. The Australian oil fields being closer to the Asian markets provide operators with good opportunity. A strong foothold by Apache in the Australian fields will help the firm to earn higher revenue by serving these markets.

Foolish takeaway
Apache is making its presence felt in most of the important oil and natural gas fields all over the world. This would aid the company in serving different potential markets and would be an advantage over companies that don't have a much presence in Australia to serve the expanding Asian market. The stock has good prospects and is worth watching.

Tyler, The Creator Gets 'Stupid' In 'BSD' Video

'I just thought it'd be funny if I ran on the beach in a wig,' Tyler tells MTV News of NSFW clip.
By Rob Markman

Tyler, The Creator

Due to the song's explicit nature, "B--- Suck D---" probably won't go down as Tyler, The Creator's most popular video, but it might be his funniest.

Like the VMA-winning "Yonkers," Wolf Haley directed the "BSD" clip, which premiered online October 11 and has already racked up more than a million YouTube views.

"I just wanted to make a video that's like the personality of me and my friends on a daily basis of just stupid sh--," Tyler told MTV News.

The Goblin track, which also features Odd Future members Jasper Dolphin and Taco, finds Tyler in one scene doing his best David Hasselhoff impersonation. At the start of his verse, the OFWGKTA frontman runs across a beach with no pants in an obvious "Baywatch" parody.

"I just thought it'd be funny if I ran on the beach in a wig. There wasn't that much thought put into it like any other video. I was just like, 'I want a video for "BSD," ' " he said.

Jasper is dressed in an orange tracksuit while working out for the cam; Taco, on the other hand, is in the kitchen cooking up a steak. His dish doesn't look half bad either, until Taco spits on the concoction and then sits his bare bottom atop the raw cut of beef.

"When I listen to the song, that's what comes up: Taco cookin', Jasper working out with really fat girls in a sh--ty setting and me running down a beach in slow motion not saying any of my f---ing lyrics," Tyler said.

In another scene, Tyler and his merry band of musical misfits take on rap video clichés: Jasper, Tyler and Taco ham for the camera wearing jewelry, driving toy cars and tossing money at scantily clad, overweight models grinding in the back. Instead of the expected hip-hop cameos, Tyler invited Cali skater Antwuan Dixon to kick, push on set. "I always wanted to make a normal rap video with cars and girls and money and 40 of my n---as in the background," he said. "So I emulated that at the end, but I did it my way."

What do you think of the "BSD" video? Let us know in the comments.

AmtrakConnect WiFi now available on at least one Northeast Regional train

Okay, so it's a little later than expected, but we're happy to report that at least some Northeast Regional trains have now been augmented by AmtrakConnect. This (free) WiFi has been available on Acela trains for some time now, and in a few lucky Regional trains in the Northwest. Amtrak still hasn't confirmed the existence of this connectivity, so we can't say for sure just how many of its trains have been suitably augmented, but we know that at least number 69, the Adirondack, has it, because we're using it right now. Connectivity is a little rough and speeds are decidedly low -- problems that can certainly be applied to this particular railway relic as a whole.

AmtrakConnect WiFi now available on at least one Northeast Regional train originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 23 Oct 2011 06:27:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Progress made in N.Korea talks: U.S. negotiator (Reuters)

GENEVA (Reuters) ? The top U.S. negotiator on North Korea said on Monday that two-day talks between the two sides in Geneva were "moving in a positive direction" after narrowing some differences but issues remained.

Ambassador Stephen Bosworth, U.S. special representative for North Korea policy, said that the U.S. goal was to find a "solid foundation" on which to relaunch bilateral and multilateral talks with Pyongyang, largely stalled since six-party talks on nuclear disarmament collapsed more than two years ago.

"We will continue to try to narrow differences," Bosworth told reporters in Geneva after hosting a dinner for the North Korean delegation led by First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye-gwan.

Avira Internet Security 2012

PCMag's last review of a security suite from Avira came out early in 2010, almost a year and a half ago. With the release of Avira Internet Security 2012 ($59.99, direct; $89.99 for 3 licenses), Avira has now joined the model-year cycle like most of its competition. Some of this suite's components are quite good, others not so hot.

The latest suite's appearance is quite a departure from that of Avira Premium Security Suite 10 ($79.95 direct for three licenses, 2.5 stars). In fact, the suite and standalone antivirus have the same layout and controls. In the free standalone antivirus the suite-only controls are simply disabled.

Protection against Malware and Phishing
The good people at Avira want to make sure everyone can have protection against viruses and other malware, so they pack their toughest malware protection into the free antivirus. The suite offers the same protection, so I'll simply summarize my findings here. For full details please read my review of Avira Free Antivirus 2012 (Free, 4 stars).

Almost all of the independent labs that I follow include Avira's technology in their testing, and they give it generally good marks. It attained the highest rating in on-demand and retrospective tests by AV-Comparatives.org, but only just achieved certification in whole-protect tests by AV-Test.org. For a full run-down on how I interpret independent lab tests see How We Interpret Antivirus Lab Tests.

Related Story

Avira installed without trouble on my malware-infested test machines. An initial scan for active malware found quite a few threats. After running a complete scan on all test systems I found that Avira detected 88 percent of the threats, the same as AVG Internet Security 2012 ($68.99 direct for three licenses, 3 stars) and TrustPort Total Protection 2012 ($89.95 direct for three licenses, 2.5 stars). Avira earned 6.7 points overall.

Looking just at rootkits, Avira didn't do so well. It detected 86 percent of them but left some rootkit processes running, earning a score of 5.0 points. To learn how I measure success at malware cleanup, see How We Test Malware Removal.

Related Story

Each time Avira detected a threat in my malware blocking test, it launched a mini-scan to round up any related traces. Its 91 percent detection rate matched that of Norton Internet Security 2012 ($69.99 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars), Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 ($79.95 direct for three licenses, 3.5 stars), and BullGuard Internet Security Suite 12 ($59.95 direct for three licenses, 2.5 stars).

Avira's 8.7 points for malware blocking is quite good. Norton earned 9.0 points, though, and Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete ($79.95 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars) aced this test, with 100 percent detection and 10 points across the board. Avira had a little rootkit trouble here too; despite its blocking efforts one rootkit managed to install and launch its stealth technology. see How We Test Malware Blocking.

Related Story

Several possible components come under the heading of privacy, among them phishing protection, password management, and identity protection. Of these, Avira offers phishing protection. However, it ?isn't very effective against very, very new phishing URLs. Its detection rate lagged behind Norton's by a full 82 percent. It did block quite a few URLs that had already been taken down, but since those URLs are no longer dangerous blocking them earns no credit. The article How We Test Antiphishing lays out my technique for testing antiphishing.

Arson suspected in Israel fires

JERUSALEM, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- A series of fires in Galilee in northern Israel are believed to have been set deliberately, officials said Saturday.

More than 60 acres of forest have burned, Ynetnews reported.

Yigal Ben-Abu, spokesman for the Western Galilee Fire Department, told Ynet the fires were likely to be arson and almost certainly the result of human activity.

"The human factor in such fires is very significant," he said. "The only question is whether these were accidental fires or was there malice involved."

Police were also suspicious because there were no high winds to spread fire, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Residents of Kibbutz Yasur and of a retirement home were evacuated, the newspaper said.

Ohio Exotic Pet Incidents, by the Numbers (ContributorNetwork)

An ongoing legislative review of exotic pet ownership laws in Ohio may stem the tide of tragic incidents that have cost both animal and human lives. Current laws in the state are among the most lenient in the nation. The expired executive order signed by former Gov. Ted Strickland before leaving office required a more comprehensive reporting of ownership and revocation when animal mistreatment occurred, but did little to bring Ohio laws up to the strict standards of ownership required in a majority of states. Although laws vary, many states required a written examination pertaining to animal care knowledge, inspection of habitat and a minimum amount of time spent handling the same breed prior to permit application.

Here are some facts about Ohio exotic pet laws and incidents.

84: The number of exotic pet incidents and escapes which have occurred in the state since tracking began in 1993.

24: The age of Brent Kandra, the most recent fatality stemming from exotic animal handling. In 2010 Kandra was killed while feeding a bear on an exotic animal farm near Cleveland. The animal was put down by local authorities.

500 pounds: The weight of black bear which was killed in Morrow County after escaping. Sheriff's Deputy Stuart Mattix who was bitten while attempting to capture the bear during the 2008 incident was forced to shoot the animal to protect the community.

80: The age of John Kokas who was beaten by a kangaroo last month on an exotic animal farm in Marion County. The elderly man recovered and the exotic pet returned to the farm. At the time of the incident, Kokas Exotics was utilizing Facebook to promote the sale of baby kangaroos and other exotic animals raised on the farm.

550 pounds: The weight of a lion kept as an exotic pet in Pike County by Terry Brumfeld. The owner was attempting to get the animal back into the cage when it ran away toward State Route 23. The lion was recovered without incident.

1: The number of known monkey bites in Noble County. An escaped macaque monkey founds its way into a parked pickup truck and bit the owner.

10: The age of a Columbiana County girl attacked by a pet mountain lion while playing at a friend's house. The child recovered and no information is available about the fate of the mountain lion.

200: The number of snakes kept by Marion area breeder Michael Joliff. The man eventually recovered from life threatening injuries from a Western diamondback rattle snake.

36: The age of an Ashtabula County woman attacked by a pet black bear. The 400-pound animal escaped from the Grand River Fur Exchange Breeding Farm.

5: The number of exotic pets which perished in a fire at a Summit County exotic animal farm. The fire which killed a pair of tiger cubs, bear cub and iguanas was not the first time law enforcement officers were alerted to issues at the facility.

1: The number of exotic pet attacks in Butler County. A lion owned by a Butler County man attacked his adult daughter and had to be shot.

12: The number of days an escaped Patagonian cavy in Clark County roamed the town before being hit along State Route 41. The 3-foot-tall, 30-pound cavy was killed upon impact.

Taiwan and China to sign nuclear power safety deal (AP)

TAIPEI, Taiwan ? Taiwan's top China negotiator says the island will sign an agreement with China later this week to cooperate on nuclear power-related security issues.

Tuesday's statement by Chiang Pin-kung comes in the midst of President Ma Ying-jeou's efforts to improve China ties.

Chiang says the agreement will help the sides set up a mechanism for informing each other of dangerous incidents at nuclear power plants.

China and Taiwan split amid civil war in 1949. Beijing still claims Taiwan as its own. Since Ma took office 3 1/2 years ago, he has facilitated more than a dozen cross-strait trade agreements.

The nuclear agreement will be signed during three days of bilateral talks starting Wednesday in the northeastern Chinese city of Tianjin.

Research in Motion announces BBX, 'combines the best of BlackBerry and QNX'

And it's real, folks -- RIM has made BBX, its latest mobile platform, official at its DevCon keynote. Dan Dodge, President of QNX, mentioned that the new OS -- designed for smartphones and tablets alike -- is a "single, unified platform for the whole world," incorporating Enterprise, NOC and cloud services. BBX will offer over 100 open source libraries and is certified for POSIX, which should entice more developers to use the new platform. It'll support HTML5 (which "acts as a bridge between old BlackBerry versions and BBX"), NativeSDK and Adobe AIR / Flash, as a few examples. Finally, the OS will offer a new advanced graphics framework called Cascade UI, enabling Super Apps that provide smooth 3D animations and deep integration with BBM and Push services on the device. Make your way to the presser below to get all of the details.

95% Moneyball

All Critics (174) | Top Critics (39) | Fresh (164) | Rotten (9)

One of the most soulful of baseball movies -- it confronts the anguish of a very tough game.

The real protagonist of Moneyball, however, is Beane himself, played with great charisma by Brad Pitt.

[Pitt] provides ballast and a swaggering humor to a movie that, too often, strives to be The Social Network of baseball movies.

Pitt, who has a producing credit, is not the sole reason this tremendous -- yet intimate -- sports tale soars over the fences. The bench is deep. And the script has a powerful but finessed swing.

Moneyball turns an unlikely subject interesting, making a professional sport the nexus where past and future collide.

Moneyball is exactly like moneyball -- infused with intelligence, amusing in its attacks on false gods, but way easier to admire than to love.

Does a crowd-pleasing job of drawing out the drama, tension and subtle sideline shadings of a story that is essential built on a high-stakes game of numbers.

More closely resembles The Social Network than it does can-of-corn horsehide epics like Field of Dreams or The Natural.

I kept hoping for something about the film to surprise me. Very little did.

Brad Pitt is having a really good year.

Like a businessman settling into his recliner after a hard day's work, Brad Pitt has slid into middle age with an ease that's both pleasurable and enviable to watch.

...isn't really a baseball movie, or even a sports movie - it feels more like a smart procedural from the '70s.

One of the most fascinating star turns of the year.

unfolds smoothly as the kind of baseball movie that even those who couldn't care less about baseball will find engrossing

Moneyball is easy to admire, a bit more difficult to love. That's because the film, like its central character (well played by Brad Pitt), keeps its emotions in check so much of the time.

Tasteful, entertaining, but not entirely satisfying. 'How can you not be romantic about baseball?' Beane asks, twice. A more relevant question might be: How can you be romantic about sabermetrics?

Recognizes that sometimes, happily-ever-afters are more complicated than uplifting Hollywood films can manage.

Pitt is mesmerizing --- he's high-strung and laid-back all at once. It's an Oscar-worthy performance.

Don't be surprised when Brad Pitt's name is announced in the Best Actor category.

It is not easy to make a film about quiet courage and unassuming heroes like these, but this film rises to that challenge and hits one right out of the park.

Brad Pitt may be the big draw but it is Jonah Hill's performance that gives the film its flavor. And when they are both on screen the movie is at its best.

Immediately one of my favorite baseball films, as well as one of my favorite Pitt performances. Only time will tell if I can delete 'one of' from those sentences.

Moneyball is an impelling triple. It's smart, agile, and effective. But it's anti-climactic. Director Bennett Miller and writers Sorkin and Zaillian could swing for a home run, but instead they settle for a base on balls.

A tender reminder that the heart sometimes still matters even if we now live in a technology-driven, Digital Age where machines lead and humans follow.

Cincinnati protesters occupy wedding photos (AP)

CINCINNATI ? After hearing reports that a local couple was having their wedding photos taken in an occupied park, Occupy Cincinnati protesters moved their demonstration ? only to have the bride and groom seek them out for pictures.

Before her wedding, bride-to-be Carolyn Hyatt told WLWT-TV ( http://bit.ly/olFuxW) the she had planned to attend the protest, but was too busy planning for the wedding.

She says the couple had already planned to go to occupied Piatt (PY'-uht) Park for pictures and they thought it would be "much cooler" to have the opportunity to be part of history.

The protesters have been camping in the park for just more than a week in protest of what they say is too much corporate influence in American government. They say they have no intention of leaving any time soon.

Palestinians aim to join U.N. bodies (Reuters)

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) ? The Palestinians will apply for full membership of as many United Nations agencies as possible as part of push to advance their national interests, an official said.

The plan is likely to generate more criticism from the United States, which has pledged to veto a Palestinian request last month for full membership of the United Nations, if it comes to a vote in the Security Council.

The Palestinians have been preparing their drive for membership of the U.N. agencies over the past two years as part of a plan to get ready for statehood, said Omar Awadallah, who heads the U.N. department at the foreign ministry.

"Our policy is now toward gaining membership of all international organizations, and specialized organizations of the United Nations as a full member," he told Reuters in an interview. "We are not looking for confrontation, we are looking to secure our rights," he said.

The plan advanced last week with a Palestinian application for full membership of the Paris-based U.N. cultural body UNESCO. The organization's board decided to put the application to a vote in a general assembly meeting later this month.

Opposed by the United States, it was the Palestinians' first application for full membership of a U.N. agency since President Mahmoud Abbas asked the United Nations in New York to admit Palestine as a full member state on September 23.

The United States and Israel oppose the Palestinian diplomatic foray in the U.N. system, describing it as an attempt to bypass the two-decade old peace process. Washington says only a resumption of peace talks ending in a treaty with Israel can bring about the Palestinian goal of statehood.

Though their application for full U.N. membership looks set to fail due to U.S. opposition, the Palestinians can still secure full membership of some international agencies, even with their current U.N. status as an "observer entity."

These include UNESCO, the World Health Organization (WHO), the international police agency Interpol and the International Telecommunications Union. U.S. pressure has in the past played a major role in dissuading the Palestinians from applying for full membership of such agencies.

But their application for full UNESCO membership, like their bid to become a full member state of the United Nations, has signaled a new Palestinian readiness to ignore U.S. objections.

"DOUBLE STANDARDS"

"There is no justification for rejecting the membership of Palestine in any of these international institutions. It's a case of double standards," Awadallah said. "It confirms one thing: America as a sponsor of the peace process is not neutral."

Acceptance of the Palestinian application for UNESCO membership would trigger an automatic cutoff in U.S. funding for the agency under U.S. law.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said this week she had made the case to U.S. lawmakers that the U.S. government should have the flexibility to decide whether or not to deny funding to such agencies if they admit the Palestinians.

She highlighted the problems that might result from a U.S. aid cutoff to agencies such as the WHO in Geneva, the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna and the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome.

Awadallah said the Palestinians had been advised by "their friends" to back out of the UNESCO application until they had secured full U.N. membership.

"We tried to apply to UNESCO, the WHO and many international organizations in the past, but we were always met with the same response: 'Wait for a solution based on negotiations'."

"For how long can we wait?" he asked, arguing that Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank was responsible for halting the peace process and postponing the chances of a negotiated deal.

"We don't want to use these organizations as platforms for politics. We want to use them to become part of the international system relating to health, for example," he said.

Assuming their application for full U.N. membership is rejected, the Palestinians could seek a U.N. General Assembly resolution that would elevate their status to a non-member state.

Such a decision has yet to be taken.

"Non-member state" status would pave the way for access to more U.N. and international agencies, Awadallah said. These could include the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court, both located in The Hague.

"We are ready to join any organization in the United Nations, including, if we become a state, the ICJ," Awadallah said. "After the end of the phase of building the institutions of state, we are now in the phase of international relations."

Obama says Iran must be held accountable for plot (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama said Thursday that officials at the "highest levels" of the Iranian government must be held accountable for a brazen and bizarre plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States on American soil, insisting leaders of the world will believe the U.S. case without dispute once they absorb the details.

U.S. officials, meanwhile, confirmed the Obama administration has had direct contact with Iran over the allegations. The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, met with Iranian officials at Iran's mission to the U.N. on Wednesday ? a highly unusual contact for two countries that do not have diplomatic relations.

Obama would not say whether Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, or its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, knew of the alleged plan. Yet he called it part of a pattern of "dangerous and reckless behavior" by the Iranian government and said people within that government were aware of a murder-for-hire plot.

The U.S. considers it an attempted act of terrorism.

"We believe that even if at the highest levels there was not detailed operational knowledge, there has to be accountability with respect to anybody in the Iranian government engaging in this kind of activity," Obama said in a news conference tied to the state visit of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak.

Iran has vehemently denied anything to do with the alleged plot to kill the Saudi envoy to the United States, Abel Al-Jubeir, at a Washington restaurant.

U.S. officials have described it as a remarkably clumsy but deadly serious operation by Iran's elite foreign action unit, the Quds Force. Two men were charged in New York federal court Tuesday for allegedly trying to hire a purported Mexican drug cartel member to carry out the assassination with a bomb attack.

Obama is seeking a vigorous response from around the world, on top of increased sanctions and pressure against Iran from the United States itself.

U.S. diplomats have given their host governments information about the foiled plot. The U.S. criminal complaint says the Iranian plotters hired a would-be assassin in Mexico who was a paid informant for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and told U.S. authorities all about their plot.

"We've laid the facts before them," Obama said of world leaders. He said once they analyze them, "there will not be a dispute" over what happened.

That State Department conceded Thursday that the response from foreign governments was initially skeptical.

"When you look at these details, it seems like something out of a movie," said department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.

"And that's always the first reaction. That was the first reaction when this effort was briefed to some senior folks in this government," she said. "But as you begin to give more detail on what we knew and when we knew it and how we knew it, it has credibility."

In some cases, countries have asked for additional information. A State Department official said interagency teams would be traveling soon to China, Russia and Turkey to provide brief authorities there further.

Lee raised the subject himself at the news conference with Obama, saying that he was "deeply shocked" and that the Korean people condemn all forms of terrorism.

Obama made the case that Iran is acting outside all norms of international behavior and that, in turn, it finds itself increasingly isolated. He said with that every violation, the United States and its allies will make sure Iran's leaders "pay a price."

In a standard allusion to military intervention, Obama said that he would remove no option of U.S. response but that the focus was on diplomatic pressure.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and other U.S. officials say the alleged plot is more evidence that Iran is the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism, a label Washington has for decades applied to the Iranian government. The officials also say it underscores concerns that despite its denials Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons under cover of a civilian atomic energy program.

In London, British Foreign Secretary William Hague told lawmakers that Britain was working with the U.S., Saudi Arabia and others to agree on a tough international response.

In Vienna, Saudi Arabia's foreign minister accused Tehran of "murder and mayhem" and said his country was working on a "measured response" to the alleged Iranian attempt to assassinate Riyadh's ambassador.

Other European nations also called for action over the alleged plot.

Germany's Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has demanded an explanation from Tehran over the alleged plot, the country's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"Indications of the involvement of Iranian government agencies cause even greater concern," the ministry said. "The federal government calls upon the Iranian government for a comprehensive explanation of the allegations. Those who took part the attack plans and their backers must be held accountable."

(AP) ? Hurricane Jova slammed into Mexico's Pacific coast as a Category 2 hurricane early Wednesday, swamping beach towns and causing floods in the mountains above before dropping to tropical storm force as it swept past Puerto Vallarta.

The storm toppled trees, knocked out power and flooded streets along the coast, which is studded with beach towns and anchored by the major seaport of Manzanillo, but the full extent of damage was still unclear early Wednesday.

One man was injured when he fell while trying to repair his roof during the storm, but there were no immediate reports of deaths, said civil defense duty officer Francisco Garnica. Power and communications in many of the towns along the coast had been knocked out by the hurricane.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Jova's maximum sustained winds were near 100 mph (160 kph) when it hit, but it weakened steadily as it moved inland and winds and it was down to tropical storm force by late morning, with winds of 65 mph (104 kph) by 10 a.m (11 a.m. EDT; 1500GMT).

Still packing heavy rains, Tropical Storm Jova passed within about 12 miles (20 kms) of Puerto Vallarta, where officials piled sandbags and tarps across the beach volleyball court that will be used in the Pan American Games that start Friday.

Heavy rain fell in Manzanillo, Mexico's second-biggest non-oil cargo port, flooding some streets and highways. The port was closed to navigation because of the storm.

Callers told local station Radio Turquesa that water was several feet (more than a meter) deep in some neighborhoods and schools, some used for shelters, were closed for the day.

The Hurricane Center in Miami warned that the storm surge could cause significant coastal flooding along the 210-mile (340-kilometer) stretch between Manzanillo and Cabo Corrientes, which is southwest of the resort city of Puerto Vallarta.

Up to 20 inches (50 centimeters) of rain could fall on isolated areas as Jova moves inland, the center said.

Before nightfall Tuesday, marines visited flood-prone areas in Manzanillo to advise people to leave. They found a home for elderly people whose homes were already flooded and evacuated dozens of people to stay with relatives, Adm. Jaime Mejia said. Forty others were evacuated in the nearby town of Tecoman, he said.

Some people vowed to ride out the storm, while others took refuge at shelters in towns like Jaluco, just inland from the beach community of Barra de Navidad.

"My house has a thatch roof, and it's not safe," said Maria de Jesus Palomera Delgado, 44, a farmworker's wife who went to an improvised shelter at a grade school in Jaluco, along with her 17 children and grandchildren.

"The neighbors told us the house was going to collapse" if hit by the hurricane, she added as the children slept nearby on folding cots packed into a classroom.

In an another classroom, migrant farmworker Rufina Francisco Ventura, 27, fed her 2-month-old son. She said she had left the ranch where she plants chiles and tomatoes planning only to pick up some free blankets, but shelter workers "told me I shouldn't leave here, because it's going to hit hard."

Jalisco state authorities evacuated about 200 people to shelters by Tuesday and issued alerts over loudspeakers placed in communities along the coast, telling people to take precautions as the hurricane approached, state civil defense spokesman Juan Pablo Vigueras said. The state had 69 shelters ready, he said.

Authorities also set up shelters for residents of inland towns, where the mountainous terrain could cause flash floods and mudslides, which often pose the greatest dangers in hurricanes

The Mexican army said it had assigned about 1,500 soldiers to hurricane preparedness and relief efforts.

By late Wednesday morning, Jova was centered about 15 miles (20 kilometers) east of Puerto Vallarta and it was moving to the north at about 6 mph (10 kph). It was expected to hit the states of Jalisco, Colima and Nayarit the hardest. About 183,000 people live in the center of the storm's projected path, said Laura Gurza, chief of the federal Civil Protection emergency response agency.

The hurricane was expected to be dissipating by the time the Pan American Games start Friday in nearby Guadalajara.

A new tropical depression formed to the southeast, with maximum sustained winds near 35 mph (55 kph), and the Hurricane Center said it could become a tropical storm later in the day.

The system caused heavy rainfall in Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of the southern Mexico state of Chiapas. Chiapas and neighboring Guatemala are particularly vulnerable to flash flooding and mudslides, because of their mountainous terrain and numerous small Indian villages perched on hillsides.

The depression was centered about 40 miles (64 kilometers) from the Chiapas coast and was moving north near 5 mph (7 kph). The hurricane center said the depression's center was expected to approach the coast Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Irwin lost some strength farther out in the Pacific with winds near 40 mph (65 kph). While it was expected to move eastward toward land, forecasts indicated it probably wouldn't make landfall.
