'Harlem Shake' videos provoke Tunisian battles

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? The "Harlem Shake" has swept up Tunisian youth, provoking attacks by conservative Muslims, condemnation by the education minister and hundreds of copycat videos.

Students at El Menzah high school filmed their own version of the global YouTube video sensation in which participants dance maniacally for 30 seconds to the song "Harlem Shake," by Brooklyn DJ Bauuer.

It sparked an angry reaction from Minister of Education Abdellatif Abid who announced an investigation of the principal for the "indecent" video.

The minister's move, however, has not stemmed a tide of new videos. In many cases, students filming the video in different schools around the country were attacked by religious conservatives.

Here are JPMorgan's best trading ideas for stock investors | Trading ...

J.P. Morgan released its list of best stock investing ideas on Tuesday, outlining how investors should position themselves for the next few months.

?The?big picture remains favorable and we want to overweight equities in 2013,? said?Thomas Lee, chief U.S. equity strategist at JPMorgan.

JPMorgan has a specific index which tracks its top picks for the first half of 2013, and includes over three dozen companies. Many are blue chip names, such as Bank of America, Walt Disney, Starbucks and Canadian Pacific.

?We see the risk/reward in equity markets as balanced,? said Mr. Lee. ?We believe investors should focus only on high-quality ideas, with strong management teams, visibility or a history of execution, valuations that are attractive and a chart that does not require major inflections to work.?

Mr. Lee, who has been known for his bullish market forecasts in the past, has a year-end target of 1,580 for the S&P 500, compared with the index?s current level of about 1,541.

?The underlying elements to support the secular bull market remain in place,? he said. ?A durable goods spending recovery is becoming more visible?(capex, housing, autos, and construction), leading to eventual re-acceleration of?corporate profits.?

JPMorgan?s top picks for 2013 have actually outperformed the S&P 500 as a group in the last three years. The top picks, which are all included in JPMorgan U.S. Best Ideas for 1H-213 Basket Index (<JPUS1H13> on Bloomberg), have posted an annualized return of 9.9% during that time period. The S&P 500 by contrast has posted an annualized return of 9.5% during that same time period.

For those interested, here is a list of stocks in the basket:

The Age of Anxiety, 1963

FLIGHT TESTING: A more useful aerostat (at least in theory), 1863 Image: SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, VOL. VIII, NO. 13; MARCH 28, 1863

March 1963

Anxious Times

?Ours is said to be the age of anxiety. But what exactly is anxiety and how can it be measured? Sigmund Freud wrote much about anxiety but was content to fall back largely on introspection and semantics for its definition. He pointed to the solid distinction in his native language between Furcht (fear) and Angst (anxiety), and most psychologists have followed him in considering anxiety to be quite different from fear. Theorists from one U.S. school of learning would have us consider anxiety as being the main drive to action. Almost in polar opposition to this view of anxiety as the effective mover is the clinical view expressed by Frank M. Berger (who discovered the chemical that led to the tranquilizer meprobamate) that anxiety is a disorganizer of effective action. Related to this disorganization concept is the psychoanalytic view that anxiety is the central problem in neurosis. In looser thinking this often degenerates into the notion that anxiety and neurosis are synonymous, with the result that people with a high anxiety level are treated as neurotics. ?Raymond B. Cattell?

?Lowering of resistance by extremely low temperatures in recently reported experiments of a Dutch investigator have gone far to confirm the theory that the electrical resistance of all conductors would be reduced to zero by cooling the conductors to the absolute zero of temperature. By boiling liquid helium in a partial vacuum a temperature of only three degrees above the absolute zero was attained. At this temperature the resistance of mercury was found to be only one ten millionth as great as at zero Centigrade.?

Police and Thieves

?It is reported that a Washington city policeman profiting by his experience in connection with stolen automobiles, has invented a lock for automobiles for application in the ignition circuit in such manner as to form a part of such circuit. The improved device is said to comprise a rotary electrical switch with which is combined a mechanical locking device. The insertion of any key other than the proper one will not permit the operation of the lock.?

Steerable Balloon

?The only practical benefits yet derived from balloons have been those from experiments which the Government has instituted in military operations for observing the position of the enemy. Mr. Thomas L. Shaw, of Nebraska Territory, has been engaged in making experiments with serial machines, and thinks he has discovered a method by which he can control the direction of the balloon and move wheresoever he listeth [wants]. Our engraving represents his device. There is a fan or propeller at the stern of the balloon, which is to be worked by the aeronaut.?

Egyptian Astronomy

?The purpose for which the colossal pyramids of Egypt were erected has always been a subject of dispute among archaeologists. Were they tombs of kings, or observatories, or sun-dials? Were they erected as barriers against the sands of the desert, or were they mere granaries? Mahmoud Bey, astronomer to the Viceroy of Egypt, now explains the matter in a novel manner. In his opinion, founded on personal observation, the pyramids were devoted to a divinity having Sirius, the Dog-star, for its emblem. Among the ancient Egyptians the stars were the souls of innumerable divinities emanating from Ammon Ra, the Supreme Being. Sirius represented the dog-of-the-heavens, Sothis, who judged the dead, so that it was perfectly rational to devote the pyramids, considered as tombs, to the star Sirius.?

Beckham to help boost image of Chinese football

By ROB HARRIS

David Beckham will play in an all-star game in China later this year as part of a deal to help raise the profile of football in the world's most populous country.

The former England captain has signed up to help boost football's appeal in China, which is trying to clean up its image by clamping down on corruption following a series of match-fixing scandals.

"I'm excited by the prospect of promoting the world's greatest game to Chinese sports fans as I've seen firsthand the growing interest in football there," said Beckham, who was linked with a move to play in the Chinese Super League after leaving the Los Angeles Galaxy in December.

"This is a wonderful sport that inspires people across the world and brings families together, so I'm relishing the opportunity of introducing more fans to the game."

Those fans should get a chance to see Beckham play in a team against China's best players in November, five months after his current contract with PSG expires. If a new PSG deal is agreed beyond the end of the season, the midfielder will ask for dispensation to make the trip.

If Beckham has decided to retire by then, the match could offer the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star a chance to bid farewell to the sport before focusing on his career away from the pitch.

"It really underlines the scale and reach of his global popularity," said Simon Fuller, Beckham's business partner. "This is the start of a new chapter in the David Beckham story."

Chinese football has been making progress in reining in rampant corruption that has been blamed in part for the national team's poor international results. The country has only played once at the World Cup, in 2002.

"Beckham's own story and his love of the game will inspire a new generation of children to play football in China so Chinese football will take its place on the world stage," said Adam Zhu from IMG, which helped to broker the deal.

Video: Kerry hears policy criticism in Egypt

>>> overseas secretary of state john kerry ran into political turbulence today in egypt both on the direction that country is taking under its new government and the long and bloody civil war in syria where there is no end in sight. we'll go to cairo tonight for that story. hello.

>> reporter: good evening, lester. it is going to be a very busy 24 hours for secretary of state john kerry but on the heels of announcing a major shift in u.s. policy on syria , some in egypt are criticizing the u.s. for not changing its policy when it comes to egypt . they say the u.s. is backing president morsi and his islamist government at the expense of democracy and human rights . a message for america's top diplomats.

>> john kerry , you have to know that the egyptian people are angry.

>> reporter: instead of pushing for democratic reform , these protesters say washington is supporting egypt 's islamist president morsi just like it once backed former leader hosni mubarak .

>> we are protesting against american interest groups and supporting a fascist regime .

>> reporter: the country's opposition warned kerry president morsi's government is undermining democracy, human rights , and consolidating power.

>> we come here as friends for the egyptian people , not for one government, for one person, or one party or ideology but for the egyptian people .

>> reporter: but egypt is facing a bigger, looming crisis. its economy is collapsing and kerry urged politicians here to put their differences aside and come to an agreement. differences that trigger clashes between police and protesters are now a frequent occurrence here. the government is struggling to maintain law and order let alone push through broader reforms. it's not just egypt though that is dominating kerry 's agenda. he also met with secretary general of the arab league . for the first time in two years the u.s. says it will now give direct, nonlethal aid to rebels fighting to topple president assad. the foreign ministers of iran and syria fired back today saying assad is the country's legitimately elected leader and would not step down from power before election next year. syria 's foreign minister called america's new policy a double standard and asked how the u.s. could give support to groups they claim killed the syrian people while calling for political solution to the conflict. now, tomorrow secretary of state john kerry will meet egypt 's president morsi to specifically spell out ways the u.s. can help get egypt 's economy back ontrack but that depends on egypt 's politicians clireconciling their differences. there is no sign they plan to do that any time soon.
