Over the past year copyright holders have asked Google to remove 51,395,353 links to infringing webpages, a dramatic surge compared to previous years. The search giant is currently processing half a million ?infringing? links per day, and this number is increasing week after week. At the same time, Hollywood and the major record labels want Google to increase its anti-piracy efforts.

In common with many other websites on the Internet Google has an obligation to remove infringing content upon receiving a valid DMCA request from copyright holders.

To give the public insight into the scope and nature of this process, Google started to publish all takedown requests online in their Transparency Report.

Since then, the number of URLs Google is being asked to remove has grown rapidly. Last week Google received takedown requests for a record-breaking 3,502,345 URLs, which is 15 times more than the amount received in January.

Google doesn?t report yearly figures, but we added up all the weekly reports and found that in 2012 Google was asked to remove 51,395,353 links to infringing webpages. Nearly all of these webpages are no longer showing up in Google?s search results.

The data further reveals the RIAA is the most active sender. The music group asked Google to remove links to 7,816,766 allegedly infringing webpages this year.

DMCA URL takedown requests per week

Looking at the websites that Google received the most takedown notices for, we see that the file-hosting search engine FilesTube tops the rankings with 2,273,280 links. While this is certainly a significant number, it?s less than one percent of all FilesTube pages indexed by Google.

Google was further asked to remove 554,613 links to The Pirate Bay, which puts the most notorious BitTorrent site in 16th place.

While copyright holders are entitled to protect their content, the avalanche of takedown requests also has a downside. Not all of the requests are correct and this quite regularly leads to the takedown of legitimate content.

Google itself also raised concerns about this worrying trend.

?As policymakers evaluate how effective copyright laws are, they need to consider the collateral impact copyright regulation has on the flow of information online,? Google?s Legal Director Fred Von Lohmann said earlier this month.

For their part, the MPAA uses the data to point out how much pirated content they have to deal with online. The Hollywood group sees Google as one of the main facilitators of copyright infringement.

?There is a staggering amount of copyright infringement taking place every day online and much of it is facilitated by Google, as their own data shows,? the MPAA noted a few weeks ago.

?We couldn?t agree more with Google that this data shows that our current system is not working ? for creators, or for Google. But we can?t lose sight of the fact that it also confirms the important role that Google has to play in helping curb the theft of creative works while protecting an Internet that works for everyone,? the Hollywood group added.

MPAA?s comments are shared by other copyright holders, who all want Google to step up its anti-piracy efforts.

Last year a behind-closed-doors meeting revealed that the copyright industry is pushing Google to completely de-list popular file-sharing sites such as The Pirate Bay, and give higher ranking to authorized sites.

Thus far Google has not de-listed any websites, but in August the search engine did start downgrading ?pirate? sites for which they receive a relatively many DMCA takedown notices. Whether this has a significant effect on the availability of pirated content is unknown.

It will be interesting to see how much the number of DMCA notices increases in the coming year, and if Google announces more anti-piracy changes.

Wall Street Week Ahead: Cliff may be a fear, but debt ceiling much scarier

(Reuters) - Investors fearing a stock market plunge - if the United States tumbles off the "fiscal cliff" next week - may want to relax.

But they should be scared if a few weeks later, Washington fails to reach a deal to increase the nation's debt ceiling because that raises the threat of a default, another credit downgrade and a panic in the financial markets.

Market strategists say that while falling off the cliff for any lengthy period - which would lead to automatic tax hikes and stiff cuts in government spending - would badly hurt both consumer and business confidence, it would take some time for the U.S. economy to slide into recession. In the meantime, there would be plenty of chances for lawmakers to make amends by reversing some of the effects.

That has been reflected in a U.S. stock market that has still not shown signs of melting down. Instead, it has drifted lower and become more volatile.

In some ways, that has let Washington off the hook. In the past, a plunge in stock prices forced the hand of Congress, such as in the middle of the financial crisis in 2008.

"If this thing continues for a bit longer and the result is you get a U.S. debt downgrade ... the risk is not that you lose two-and-a-half percent, the risk is that you lose ten and a half," said Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist at UBS Equity Research, in New York.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said this week that the United States will technically reach its debt limit at the end of the year.

INVESTORS WARY OF JANUARY

The White House has said it will not negotiate the debt ceiling as in 2011, when the fight over what was once a procedural matter preceded the first-ever downgrade of the U.S. credit rating. But it may be forced into such a battle again. A repeat of that war is most worrisome for markets.

Markets posted several days of sharp losses in the period surrounding the debt ceiling fight in 2011. Even after a bill to increase the ceiling passed, stocks plunged in what was seen as a vote of "no confidence" in Washington's ability to function, considering how close lawmakers came to a default.

Credit ratings agency Standard & Poor's lowered the U.S. sovereign rating to double-A-plus, citing Washington's legislative problems as one reason for the downgrade from triple-A status. The benchmark S&P 500 dropped 16 percent in a four-week period ending August 21, 2011.

"I think there will be a tremendous fight between Democrats and Republicans about the debt ceiling," said Jon Najarian, a co-founder of online brokerage TradeMonster.com, in Chicago.

"I think that is the biggest risk to the downside in January for the market and the U.S. economy."

There are some signs in the options market that investors are starting to eye the January period with more wariness. The CBOE Volatility Index, or the VIX, the market's preferred indicator of anxiety, has remained at relatively low levels throughout this process, though on Thursday it edged above 20 for the first time since July.

More notable is the action in VIX futures markets, which shows a sharper increase in expected volatility in January than in later-dated contracts. January VIX futures are up nearly 23 percent in the last seven trading days, compared with a 13 percent increase in March futures and an 8 percent increase in May futures. That's a sign of increasing near-term worry among market participants.

The CBOE Volatility Index closed on Friday at 22.72, gaining nearly 17 percent to end at its highest level since June as details emerged of a meeting on Friday afternoon of President Barack Obama with Senate and House leaders from both parties where the president offered proposals similar to those already rejected by Republicans. Stocks slid in late trading and equity futures continued that slide after cash markets closed.

"I was stunned Obama didn't have another plan, and that's absolutely why we sold off," said Mike Shea, a managing partner and trader at Direct Access Partners LLC, in New York.

Obama offered hope for a last-minute agreement to avoid the fiscal cliff after a meeting with congressional leaders, although he scolded Congress for leaving the problem unresolved until the 11th hour.

"The hour for immediate action is here," he told reporters at a White House briefing. "I'm modestly optimistic that an agreement can be achieved."

The U.S. House of Representatives is set to convene on Sunday and continue working through the New Year's Day holiday. Obama has proposed maintaining current tax rates for all but the highest earners.

Consumers don't appear at all traumatized by the fiscal cliff talks, as yet. Helping to bolster consumer confidence has been a continued recovery in the housing market and growth in the labor market, albeit slow.

The latest take on employment will be out next Friday, when the U.S. Labor Department's non-farm payrolls report is expected to show jobs growth of 145,000 for December, in line with recent growth.

Consumers will see their paychecks affected if lawmakers cannot broker a deal and tax rates rise, but the effect on spending is likely to be gradual.

PLAYING DEFENSE

Options strategists have noted an increase in positions to guard against weakness in defense stocks such as General Dynamics because those stocks would be affected by spending cuts set for that sector. Notably, though, the PHLX Defense Index is less than 1 percent away from an all-time high reached on December 20.

This underscores the view taken by most investors and strategists: One way or another, Washington will come to an agreement to offset some effects of the cliff. The result will not be entirely satisfying, but it will be enough to satisfy investors.

"Expectations are pretty low at this point, and yet the equity market hasn't reacted," said Carmine Grigoli, chief U.S. investment strategist at Mizuho Securities USA, in New York. "You're not going to see the markets react to anything with more than a 5 (percent) to 7 percent correction."

Save for a brief 3.6 percent drop in equity futures late on Thursday evening last week after House Speaker John Boehner had to cancel a scheduled vote on a tax-hike bill due to lack of Republican support, markets have not shown the same kind of volatility as in 2008 or 2011.

A gradual decline remains possible, Golub said, if business and consumer confidence continues to take a hit on the back of fiscal cliff worries. The Conference Board's measure of consumer confidence fell sharply in December, a drop blamed in part on the fiscal issues.

"If Congress came out and said that everything is off the table, yeah, that would be a short-term shock to the market, but that's not likely," said Richard Weiss, a Mountain View, California-based senior money manager at American Century Investments.

"Things will be resolved, just maybe not on a good time table. All else being equal, we see any further decline as a buying opportunity."

Orange County Register Owner Eyes Tribune Papers

SANTA ANA, Calif. ? The publisher of the Orange County Register said Thursday that at an investor group he leads may want to buy Tribune Co.'s newspapers after the media conglomerate emerges from bankruptcy.

"We clearly have the means and the team by which to look seriously at the Tribune papers and, from the outside, they may very well have enough of the elements that we're looking for," said Aaron Kushner, chief executive of 2100 Trust LLC, which bought Freedom Communications Inc. and its flagship paper, the Register, in July.

Tribune, which is expected to leave bankruptcy protection soon, owns the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Baltimore Sun and five other daily newspapers. The Chicago-based conglomerate also operates 23 television stations.

Kushner cautioned that he hasn't examined Tribune's finances but signaled he would move quickly if he determined its newspapers are a good fit.

"I think it's a pretty small group that potentially could fit our model," he said in an interview.

Kushner, who is also Freedom Communications' CEO, has overseen the hiring of dozens of journalists and a major expansion of the print edition of the Register, the nation's 20th-largest newspaper by circulation and a direct competitor of the Los Angeles Times. Freedom Communications is the 39-year-old's first foray in newspapers after he flirted with buying The Boston Globe and newspapers in Maine.

Tribune filed for bankruptcy protection in December 2008, less than a year after a debt-laden buyout engineered by Sam Zell. Its new owners include JPMorgan Chase & Co., debt specialist Angelo, Gordon & Co., and hedge fund Oaktree Capital Management.

Kushner said he expects the Tribune's new owners would sell the newspapers in a single package.

"There's a tremendous amount of infrastructure that's shared among the newspapers, and they have been together, with the exception of the LA Times, for a long time," Kushner said. "Disassembling them in an auction sort of a way or a process may be achievable, but our sense is it would end up resulting in significantly less for the current owners of the Tribune Co."

Freedom recently sold The Gazette in Colorado Springs, Colo. Kushner signaled he was open to selling Freedom's five smaller newspapers in California and Arizona.

"We wouldn't have bought them if we didn't love them. That said, if we find that there is an owner that can do an even better job than us with them, we'll talk with them," he said.

Homicides and shootings in New York are at their lowest in a half-century, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday.

Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly credited stepped-up policing for the 19.6 percent drop in homicides (from 515 last year to 414 through Friday) and the 15.9 percent decline in overall shootings (from 1,608 last year to 1,353).

That's the fewest homicides since the city started keeping such statistics in 1963, and it's dramatically lower than the record high of 2,245 set in 1990.

The most recent FBI figures show that homicides have been falling in most major cities in recent years, but the drop in New York far outpaces the national average decline of 4 percent from 2010 to 2011, the last full year for which federal figures are available.

Kelly said officers had taken 8,000 weapons "out of the hands of people we stop, 800 of them illegal handguns," while Bloomberg singled out the city's participation in Operation Impact, a 2003 state initiative that pairs new police recruits with veteran officers in specific high-crime areas, as a particular success.

"The fact that the safest big city in America is safer than ever is a testament to the hard work and determination of the men and women who put their lives on the line for us every day ? and it also reflects our commitment to doing everything possible to stop gun violence," Bloomberg said in a statement.

Neither man specifically mentioned the city's controversial stop-and-frisk policy, which allows officers to search someone as he or she leaves a private building if they have a "reasonable suspicion" that the person is likely to commit a crime.

The policy is under legal challenge from civil liberties groups, which contend that police use it as a pretext to stop and search anyone without cause and contend in court documents that three-quarters of all New Yorkers searched under it are African-American or Latino. A trial is set for March.

Acid Mine Drainage Sludge May Help Clean Water By Removing Phosphorus, New Study Claims

LEETOWN, W.Va. (AP) ? Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey say a byproduct of acid mine drainage treatment may be able to help clean agricultural and municipal wastewaters.

The recently published study was done at the agency's Leetown Science Center in West Virginia. It shows that dried acid mine drainage sludge can be used as a low-cost adsorbent to remove phosphorus from wastewaters.

Acid mine drainage is produced whenever sulfide minerals from coal and metal deposits are exposed to air and moisture. The resulting acid and dissolved metals are toxic to most forms of aquatic life. The USGS says that untreated drainage has impacted more than 5,000 miles of streams in the Appalachian region, which has associated economic impacts of millions of lost dollars in the tourism and sport fishing industries.

Officials say the new technology can potentially help lower acid mine drainage treatment costs, prevent the degrading of aquatic ecosystems and recycle valuable nutrients.

Philip Sibrell, lead author of the study said the new technology is a "win-win situation" because it could reduce or eliminate the need to dispose of acid mine drainage sludge. Instead, that same sludge could be useful in addressing the urgent need to reduce the amount of phosphorus going into aquatic ecosystems.

"As environmental scientists, we kind of hesitate to use this analogy, but it really is like killing two birds with one stone," Sibrell said in a news release.

The mine drainage residuals also can be reused for a number of additional treatment cycles, scientists say.

"This wonderful result shows the inventive application of some very sophisticated environmental chemistry to create a new life cycle for what otherwise would have been some problematic waste products," said USGS Director Marcia McNutt.

Biggest Media Departures And Arrivals Of 2012

The past year in media saw on-air talent switch networks, new shows launch, publications fold, hosts leave, leadership shake-ups and more.

The most notable departures and arrivals occurred on morning television programs across the broadcast networks. The arguably worst-handled departure was "Today" co-host Ann Curry's teary exit from the NBC morning news program. Her departure sent the cash cow into troubled waters filled with declining ratings, gossip-fueled press reports, and what some considered an image problem.

Over at ABC, co-host Robin Roberts took medical leave after being diagnosed with a rare blood and bone marrow disorder, MDS. And ABC's mid-morning show "Live! With Kelly" found its new co-host in Michael Strahan. While at CBS, former "CBS This Morning" host Erica Hill was replaced with the network's chief White House correspondent Norah O'Donnell. Hill landed at NBC's "Today" show to host the program's weekend edition.

But multiple changes occurred behind the scenes in the cable news industry as well?notably Jeff Zucker's appointment as CNN's new president. However arrivals and departures were not just limited to TV. The Newspaper, magazine, and online industries saw shake-ups as well?most notable being Newsweek publishing its final print edition just before the company moved to an all-digital format.

• Ann Curry Leaves "Today"

  In a messy morning TV shake-up, Ann Curry was ousted from "Today" one year she took over as co-host. She spent more than a decade on the show. The program has not yet fully recovered from the departure as many viewers site the network's treatment of Curry as the reason why they tuned away.

• Savannah Guthrie Replaces Ann Curry At "Today"

  Shortly after Curry left "Today," Savannah Guthrie was named as co-host. Guthrie joined the "Today" show's 9:00 a.m. hour one year earlier, when Curry was promoted to co-host.

• Matt Lauer's Popularity Fades

  The beloved NBC morning host's popularity dwindled after Ann Curry left "Today" as some viewers blamed Lauer for her departure. Rumors swirled in tabloids that Lauer was involved in the decision. NBC News chief Steve Capus and "Today's" then-executive producer Jim Bell repeatedly defended Lauer in the press, stressing that the he was not involved with the network's decision to replace Curry with Savannah Guthrie.

• Willie Geist Joins "Today"

  "Morning Joe" co-host and frequent "Today" guest host officially joined the NBC News morning show. He still appears on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" from 6-7:00 a.m., then crosses the plaza to host the 9:00 a.m. hour of "Today."

• Norah O'Donnell Joins "CBS This Morning"

  CBS' chief White House correspondent Norah O'Donnell joined the network's morning show over the summer.

• Erica Hill Leaves "CBS This Morning" For "Today"

  Erica Hill previously co-hosted "CBS This Morning" with Charlie Rose and Gayle King, but was replaced earlier this year. She recently joined the "Today" show's weekend edition and co-hosts the program alongside Lester Holt on Saturdays and Sundays.

• Ryan Seacrest Joins NBC News As Olympics Correspondent For "Today"

  Ryan Seacrest joined NBC News just before the Olympics as a correspondent. He traveled to London with the "Today" show and appeared on the program a number of times. Seacrest, a large presence on the E! that, like NBC Universal, is owned by Comcast, was widely rumored to eventually replace Matt Lauer when he leaves "Today."

• Executive Producer Jim Bell Leaves "Today"

  After seven years as the "Today" show's executive producer, Jim Bell left the morning show for a role with NBC Sports. Bill executive produced the network's coverage of the 2012 London Olympics, which brought in record ratings and revenue, despite complaints from viewers. The departure seemed almost inevitable after "Today" experienced a year filled with declining ratings and a nasty anchor shake-up.

• "Live! With Kelly And Michael" Launches

  After Regis Philbin left "Live!" at the end of 2011, the ABC morning show announced the addition of Michael Strahan as co-host in September.

• Robin Roberts Takes Medical Leave

  "GMA" co-host Robin Roberts went on medical leave from the ABC morning show in September, after being diagnosed with the rare blood and bone marrow disorder, MDS. "GMA" has kept viewers abreast of her recovery journey.

• George Stephanopoulos Returns To "This Week"

  George Stephanopoulos returned to ABC News' Sunday public affairs show "This Week" after Christiane Amanpour left the show in December 2011. He previously anchored the morning show for eight years before Amanpour, who anchored the show for a little more than one year.

• "Face The Nation" Extends To 1 Hour

  Mark Thompson began his tenure as New York Times CEO amidst scandal. News broke that the BBC program "Newsnight" scratched an investigative report outing famed British broadcaster Jimmy Savile as a serial child sex offender. Thompson was director general of the BBC when the decision was made.

• George Entwistle Resigns From BBC

  George Entwistle resigned as director general of the BBC after the Jimmy Savile scandal struck the iconic broadcasting company.

• The Daily Folds

  News Corp.'s daily iPad news publication folded almost two years after it launched. The application was hailed as a wave of the future when it debuted, but failed to resonate with a large enough audience to sustain it.

• HuffPost Live Launches

  The Huffington Post debuted its video streaming network in April 2012.

• Jeff Zucker Joins CNN

  CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton stepped down from his post at the end of 2012. Former NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker, famous for his nasty late night feud with Conan O'Brien, was named CNN's new chief.

• CNN Launches "Early Start" And "Starting Point"

  CNN's Soledad O'Brien returned to the mornings after the network debuted two new shows in 2012: "Early Start" from 5-7:00 a.m.; and "Starting Point" from 7-9:00 a.m. O'Brien hosts later show.

• "Fox & Friends First" Launches

  To compete with MSNBC's "Way Too Early" and CNN's "Early Start," Fox News debuted its early morning show, "Fox & Friends First."

• Keith Olbermann Fired From Current TV

Netflix Inc., the world?s biggest video-streaming service, said access to its movies and television shows was restored after a disruption caused by Amazon.com Inc.?s Web storage and computing system.

Many customers in the Americas weren?t able to access online content from approximately 3:30 p.m. EDT until late Christmas Eve, according to Joris Evers, a spokesman for Netflix. The blockage was caused by issues with Amazon Web Services, a business hosted on the Internet that?s separate from the online retail store, he said.

Subscription and on-demand services are becoming an important source of revenue for Netflix, which first offered DVD rentals via mail. Streaming services made up 70 percent of sales in the third quarter. Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings has led a push to make Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix available around the world, arguing people will pay for near-instant access to content online.

Google vs. Microsoft: Santa-tracking systems go out of sync

Not even Santa Claus can avoid getting drawn into the tech clash between Google and Microsoft: The two companies have set up separate online systems to track where the Jolly Old Elf has been on Christmas Eve?? but they show him simultaneously at widely separated locations, delivering presents at a dramatically different rate.

On the official "NORAD Tracks Santa" website, powered this year by Microsoft, Santa Claus was in Rome, well past the 3-billion-present mark in his holiday rounds. At the same time, Google's Santa Tracker showed him buzzing through Agadez in the African country of Niger, not quite up to the 1-billion-present mark.

They can't both be right. Can they? Here's the word from Search?Engine?Land's Danny Sullivan, who has been tracking the discrepancy in this year's?Santa-tracking software:

"NORAD explains that it uses everything from radar to jets to track Santa. Google doesn?t explain its technology, but I suspect it tries to triangulate Santa using his cell phone signal or use of wifi hotspots.

"As for why NORAD shows Father Christmas delivering three?times the number of gifts that Google is listing, perhaps NORAD?s radars can better pinpoint presents while Google might be doing estimating.?Meanwhile? both services sometimes show presents being delivered over oceans! And why is NORAD showing Santa arriving in some places at 9pm rather than midnight, as has been the case in the past?"

Maybe this is just the sort of thing that happens when you switch software: NORAD (also known as the North American Aerospace Defense Command) has been monitoring Santa's flight as a public service since 1955, and five years ago, it teamed up with Google to keep up with the crush of Web traffic. This year, however, the NORAD Santa operation parted ways with Google and partnered with Microsoft instead.

Google stayed in the Santa game by setting up its own tracking system for "Santa's Dashboard" and Google Maps?? a system that doesn't make use of NORAD's tracking data.

Today, Canadian Maj. Gen. Andre Viens, a spokesman for NORAD, declined to intervene in the Santa-tracking war.

"It's not affecting our tracking," Viens told MSNBC. "We're not in competition with anyone. Our role, and we've been doing that for more than?50 years, is to track Santa and make sure that he has a safe and secure journey throughout the world, and throughout North America in particular."

And once you accept that, it's not that big of a leap to detect Santa in two places at once.

Health And Fitness Journal How Diet and Supplements Can Help ...

An estimated 26 million Americans suffer with migraines. Approximately 80 percent of them are women. All in all, about one in five women get migraines while only one in 16 men get them, according to migraines.org.¹ About 60 percent of women affected have menstrual-related migraines, meaning it tends to coincide with their menstrual cycle.

A migraine headache is characterized as an intense throbbing or pulsing headache, typically in one area or side of your head, and is commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.

Those who have never had a migraine before can be very frightened with the neurological symptoms. The visual problems are most problematic as a migraine can simulate a stroke where you start to have disturbed vision and even short term visual loss and flashing lights.

Migraine attacks can cause debilitating pain for several hours to several days. Some migraineurs experience ?aura? sensations before an attack. These are sensory warning symptoms, such as flashes of light, blind spots, or tingling in your arm or leg.

The featured article² recently brought up the dietary links to migraines ? specifically how the grain- and dairy-free Paleo diet appears to help banish the pain for many people. This is not entirely surprising, considering that milk and wheat are two major food allergens.

Are Food Allergies Causing Your Migraines?

Searching the medical literature in PubMed.gov using the search terms ?migraine? and ?food allergies? will provide you with more than 150 different studies.³ Some of the top migraine-inducing foods identified include:

Yeast	Corn	Citrus	Eggs

Processed foods in general can also contribute to allergies for a number of different reasons, and most processed foods contain a variety of food colorings, flavors, preservatives, and other additives that may also promote headaches and migraines. Both aspartame and MSG are notorious for causing headaches and triggering migraines. Besides noting whether or not your migraines typically occur after eating a specific food, additional questions that can help you determine whether or not you might have a food sensitivity or allergy are:

• Do you experience bloating after meals, gas, frequent belching, or any kind of digestive problems?
• Do you have chronic constipation or diarrhea?
• Do you have a stuffy nose after meals?
• Do you have low energy or feel drowsy after eating?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, you may want to investigate further. Keeping a detailed food diary is the easiest way to start tracking down potentially migraine-inducing foods, as well as foods that cause other symptoms of sensitivity. Keep in mind that eliminating your migraines is not the only health benefit you can reap from identifying food allergies or sensitivities. Eliminating food antigens is also critical for gut health. I?ve written extensively on this topic, as medical science is now beginning to realize just how important your gut is, not just for physical health, but emotional and psychological health as well.

Elimination Diets Shown Helpful in Reducing or Eliminating Migraines

In a 1979 study published in the Lancet,⁴ 60 migraineurs with food antigen immunoreactivity who were put on an elimination diet experienced profound relief. According to the author:

?The commonest foods causing reactions were wheat (78 percent), orange (65 percent), eggs (45 percent), tea and coffee (40 percent each), chocolate and milk (37 percent) each), beef (35 percent), and corn, cane sugar, and yeast (33 percent each).

When an average of 10 common foods were avoided there was a dramatic fall in the number of headaches per month, 85 percent of patients becoming headache-free. The 25 percent of patients with hypertension became normotensive. Chemicals in the home environment can make this testing difficult for outpatients. Both immunological and non-immunological mechanisms may play a part in the pathogenesis of migraine caused by food intolerance.?

A randomized, double blind, cross-over study published in 2010⁵ also found that a six-week long diet restriction produced a statistically significant reduction in migraines in those diagnosed with migraine without aura. If you notice your migraines start up shortly after eating a specific food, then that?s a good place to start. Keep in mind that you can also be sensitive to food additives like artificial colors, preservatives, flavor enhancers (MSG), and aspartame so read the food labels, and note the ingredients in your food journal.

One of the best things you can do if you believe you are suffering from a food allergy is to do a diet elimination challenge. Simply remove all foods that contain what you believe you are allergic to and see if your symptoms improve over the next several days. Keep in mind that depending on your typical migraine frequency, you may need to avoid the suspected food for a few weeks in order to evaluate whether it had an effect or not.

To confirm the results, you?ll want to reintroduce the food or drink (on an empty stomach). If the suspected food is the culprit you will generally be able to feel the allergy symptoms return within an hour, although migraines can sometimes have a longer lag time than, say, bloating or drowsiness.

Diet for Migraine Relief

Quite a few people report ridding themselves of migraines on the Paleo diet, which can be summarized as ?any food that can be eaten without being processed.? That means no grains, bread or pasta, and no pasteurized dairy, but does include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, some nuts and oils along with wild caught fish, organic poultry and grass-fed lean meats. You can easily mold your diet around the principles of Paleo eating by following my nutrition plan. The full details are described in the plan, but generally speaking, the following key factors apply to any ?healthy diet?:

• Eliminate all gluten products
• Eliminate the other 10 common foods that the Lancet study found helpful in making 85 percent of participants headache free
• Eliminate all artificial sweeteners, especially aspartame. My sister is one of many who will get a guaranteed migraine if she consumes any aspartame. Obviously, even if you don?t have migraines, there simply is no reason to ever consume aspartame
• Unprocessed whole foods
• Often raw or only lightly cooked (ideally, try to eat at least one-third of your food raw, or as much as you can manage)
• Organic or grass-fed, and free from additives and genetically modified ingredients
• Come from high-quality, local sources
• Carbohydrates primarily come from vegetables (except corn and potatoes, which should typically be avoided). Dramatically lowering your intake of non-vegetable carbs could improve leptin and insulin signaling which could also improve migraines

I believe a return to ?real food? is one of the most profound interventions for the 21st century. We?ve strayed so far from the foods we are designed to eat, going back to basics and refocusing your diet on fresh, whole, unprocessed, ?real? food can improve just about anyone?s health, regardless of what health issues you need to address.

Helpful Supplements and More

In terms of supplements that might be helpful for migraines, one of the most critical is ubiquinol (the reduced form of Coenzyme Q10). According to experts like Dr. Robert Barry, an underlying problem involved with migraines is mitochondrial dysfunction. Ubiquinol plays a vital role in ATP production, which is the basic fuel for your mitochondria. Your body does produce ubiquinol naturally, in fact it is the predominant form in most healthy cells, tissues and organs, however, with rampant pollution and poor diet, mitochondrial dysfunction has become increasingly common.

A 2005 study published in Neurology⁶ found that CoQ10 was superior to a placebo in preventing migraines and reducing severity. Of the patients who received 100 mg of CoQ10 three times a day, 50 percent reported significantly reduced frequency of headaches compared to only 14 percent of those who took the placebo. Ubiquinol is the reduced form of CoQ10, and studies have repeatedly demonstrated that it is far more effective than CoQ10 due to its superior bioavailability.

Other dietary supplements that can be helpful for migraines include:

• Magnesium. This is probably the most important one as it contributes to relaxing the brain blood vessels that cause the pain. The best magnesium supplement I know of is magnesium threonate as it penetrates cell membranes, including the mitochondria, and no other magnesium supplement does this. Interestingly, some of the best drugs used to treat migraines are calcium channel blockers, and that is how magnesium works. Supplemental magnesium would be FAR safer than a calcium channel blocker
• Vitamin B2 (riboflavin)
• Vitamin B6
• Vitamin B12
• Folic acid

A 2009 study⁷ evaluated the effect of 2 mg of folic acid, 25 mg vitamin B6, and 400 micrograms of vitamin B12 in 52 patients diagnosed with migraine with aura. Compared to the placebo group, those receiving these supplements experienced a 50 percent reduction in migraine disability over a six-month period. Previous studies, such as a 2004 study in the European Journal of Neurology,⁸ have also reported that high doses of B2 (riboflavin) can help prevent migraine attacks.

Patients received 400 mg riboflavin per day. Headache frequency was reduced from four days per month at baseline to two days per month after three months. Headache duration and intensity did not change significantly however. Keep in mind that prophylactic supplement regimens may take several weeks to produce results, so don?t give up too soon. Typically, if the supplement is the right one, you?ll notice results in about three to six months.

Exercise is something that should also be considered as an enormously useful strategy.

Last but not least, the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) often provides results for migraine headache relief. Newcomers who use this simple process by themselves tend to achieve relief 50 percent to 80 percent of the time. EFT is a very profound intervention that can be used in addition to the above strategies, it can also be useful for helping compliance to the lifestyle changes recommended.
