Treasurys edge higher in light trading on Europe (AP)

NEW YORK ? Demand for U.S. government debt remained strong Thursday as yields on Italian government bonds stayed stubbornly high after the latest auction.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury note edged up 18.8 cents per $100 invested. Its yield fell to 1.90 percent from 1.93 percent late Wednesday.

Italy paid 6.98 percent on a 10-year bond auction, dangerously close to the 7 percent threshold at which Greece and Portugal had to seek bailouts from their creditors. That kept demand high for relatively low-risk assets like Treasurys.

In other trading the 30-year bond rose 37.5 cents. Its yield fell to 2.90 percent from 2.92 percent. The yield on the two-year note was unchanged at 0.27 percent.

The yield on the three-month T-bill was 0.01 percent. Its discount wasn't available.

Trading was quiet on the second-to-last trading day of 2011. Markets will be closed Monday in observance of New Year's Day, which falls on Sunday.

Death toll of Aug. blast at UN Nigeria rises to 25 (AP)

ABUJA, Nigeria ? The U.N. says another staff member has died about four months after a car bombing hit its Nigeria headquarters, bringing the death toll to 25.

The U.N. said in a statement Wednesday that Fred Willis, who worked for The United Nations Children's Fund, died in South Africa on Dec. 23.

It said Willis was one of 12 U.N. staff members flown on life support to South Africa for treatment after the Aug. 26 attack.

A radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the blast that also wounded 116 people. It was the group's first suicide attack targeting foreigners.

Boko Haram has reported links to al-Qaida and also has claimed responsibility for coordinated Christmas Day attacks that killed 39 people.

Bahrain to host Saudi prince's news network (AP)

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates ? Bahrain has been picked to host the headquarters for Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal's new international Arabic news network despite months of unrest, according to the tiny Gulf kingdom's media oversight authority.

Alwaleed's channel, dubbed Alarab, will be based in the Bahraini capital Manama's new Media City office complex, Sheik Fawaz bin Mohammed Al-Khalifa, a member of the Bahraini royal family and head of the country's Information Affairs Authority, said in a statement late Tuesday.

The network is expected to be launched next December with an initial staff of about 300 people, according to the Bahraini statement.

Alwaleed's office has not itself said where the channel will be based.

Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi journalist hired to lead the network, said by email Wednesday he expects the deal to be finalized later in the day.

The channel aims to focus "on the important shifts taking place across the Arab world, with an emphasis on freedom of speech and freedom of press," Alwaleed said in September.

The new channel will compete against older pan-Arab news networks bankrolled by wealthy Gulf backers, including Qatar's Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya, which is funded by Saudi investors but based in Dubai.

Alwaleed has signed a deal with business news service Bloomberg LP to provide content for Alarab. That could potentially put it in competition with Dubai-based business news channel CNBC Arabiya as well.

The Saudi prince, through the Kingdom Holding Co. investment firm he controls, has a major stakes in Citigroup Inc., Apple Inc. and Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.

He and the investment company last week invested a combined $300 million into microblogging site Twitter, which played a key role in conveying developments during this year's Arab Spring uprisings.

The senior management of Alwaleed's Rotana entertainment television division is also expected to move to Bahrain as part of the deal, according to the IAA. Rotana runs film and music video channels across the Middle East that draw on the company's extensive Arabic film and music catalogs.

Bahrain has been shaken by 10 months of large-scale protests, and clashes between security forces loyal to the Sunni monarchy and opposition groups led by the country's majority Shiites.

The kingdom's leadership is closely allied to Saudi Arabia, which looms large in Bahrain's domestic politics and provides vital tourist dollars. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states sent security forces into Bahrain at the invitation of the king to help put down the protests in March.

Members of the Lake City community are finding ways to give back to an injured police officer and his family.

A burger fundraiser Thursday night was one of several events benefiting Shawn Schneider, the Lake City officer critically injured in a shooting last week.

Organizers of Thursday's event were expecting to serve at least 500 burgers at $5 each. All of the money will go to Schneider's family, which includes the officer's wife and three children.

Shortly after the fundraiser, organizers had counted at least $6,300, far exceeding their goal.

Other people are finding different ways to help. A local salon is giving $10 haircuts next Monday, with all of the money benefiting Schneider's family.

Police kill 7 hostage-takers in China?s Xinjiang

By Agence France-Presse
Wednesday, December 28, 2011

?

BEIJING ? China said Thursday police killed seven ?terrorists? who took hostages in the nation?s restive Xinjiang region during a rescue operation that left one police officer dead.

A ?violent terrorist group? kidnapped two people in the northwestern region?s Pishan county late Wednesday night, prompting a stand-off with police, the Xinjiang government said on its official Twitter-like weibo account.

During the stand-off in Pishan, in southern Xinjiang, the kidnappers killed one police officer and wounded another. Police opened fire and killed seven of the suspects, and wounded and arrested four others, it added.

The two hostages were subsequently rescued, it said, without providing further details.

Xinjiang ? a resource-rich region that borders eight countries ? has been the scene of sporadic bouts of violence, much of which has been blamed by Beijing on the ?three forces? of extremism, separatism and terrorism.

The region is home to roughly nine million Turkic-speaking Uighurs who have long bristled under Chinese rule, and many members of the ethnic minority accuse the government of religious and political repression.

It was unclear whether the kidnappers involved in the latest incident were Uighurs.

Police in Pishan refused to comment when contacted by AFP, and the local government was not immediately available for comment.

One held as Indian's killing sparks outrage on Facebook

One held as Indian's killing sparks outrage on Facebook
Albuquerque Express
Tuesday 27th December, 2011??
(IANS)

A 17-year-old British youth has been arrested over the fatal shooting of Indian student Anuj Bidve in Manchester, triggering condemnation on social networking website Facebook.

Bidve, 23, was part of a group of nine men and women -- all Indian students -- visiting the city for a short break for Christmas. He was a postgraduate student in micro-electronics at Lancaster University.

The arrested youth was being questioned, said BBC.

Hailing from Pune in India's Maharashtra state, Bidve was shot in the head while walking from his hotel in Salford area towards the Manchester city centre around 1.30 a.m. He died at a hospital a short while later.

Two men walked up to Bidve and his friends outside an eatery. After a short exchange of words, one man pulled out a pistol and shot the Indian student in the side of the head at point-blank range. The two fled, leaving Bidve dying in the street in a pool of blood.

Manchester police chief superintendent Kevin Mulligan said it was an 'awful, unprovoked attack on a young student'.

Witnesses said the attack was not a robbery or racially motivated.

The gunman was a white man in his mid 20s, of slim build and wearing a grey top. The other man had a heavier build and wore a black jacket.

Bidve's friends were being looked after in a 'safe place' by police.

Shocked neighbours told the Manchester Evening News they no longer felt safe in their own homes.

Donna Wilson, a 30-year-old mother of two young children, said: 'We were in bed when it happened and I woke up and saw the forensics people outside. It's right there, practically on my own doorstep. You don't feel safe in your own home.'

'I was up at six o'clock and saw all the police out of the window. I felt sick when I heard what happened. It's disgusting,' Kerry Thompson, who has lived there for 11 years, was quoted as saying.

A university spokeswoman said counselling and support was being organised for the friends who were described as 'deeply upset', reported Sky News.

Bidve's father Subhash turned to Facebook to seek assistance: 'Pl help in getting Anuj's dead body back to India.'

The social networking website has been flooded with comments condemning the killing.

Rakesh Sonawane, a resident of Pune, who now stays in Manchester, described on Facebook what he saw at the spot.

'In the early hours of the morning - I arrived at a scene i will never forget. Anuj Bidve had been shot in the head - for no reason what so ever. I feel like i myself did not do enough to help Anuj this morning - i feel that neither did the police and ambulance crews.'

He added: 'I personally feel disgusted that someone from our town could do such a thing to a visitor of our city.'

Sunit Parab from Glasgow said it was 'really a sad incident to have happened'.

Yas Miin, another Facebook user, termed the killers 'sick scumbags' and sought their hanging.

Manchester residents Becca Cloughley Lewtas said she was 'ashamed that someone from my city would do such a vile act'.

'I truly hope they catch the vermin who did this to you,' she wrote further.

Shripad Sathe, however, opposed taking the body back to India.

'Whilst I did not know this gentleman before, might I also, with due respect to everyone, also suggest last respects might be paid in the UK, rather than carry him (all with paperwork etc which is mentally traumatic) to India? Sincere apologies if this hurts anyone,' Sathe wrote on the website.

Los Padres sanctuary goes to the rescue of wolf dogs

Chained to posts on a half-acre lot, the 29 wolf dogs languished for years behind stockade fencing at a roadside attraction near Anchorage.

The wolf hybrids were unable to touch one another except when they were bred through chain-link fences. Several had sore backs and legs because they had never been able to move more than a few yards at a time.

The animals were seized by Alaskan authorities as evidence in an ongoing criminal investigation and scheduled for destruction before the Lockwood Valley Animal Rescue Center intervened. The center had the wolf dogs spayed and neutered, then transported by plane and truck to its sanctuary in the Los Padres National Forest, about 90 miles north of Los Angeles.

PHOTOS: New life for rescued wolf dogs

They arrived at the 20-acre sanctuary Dec. 12 and will live the rest of their lives unchained, in sprawling enclosures and networks of wire holding pens.

Striding toward a pen shaded by scrub oaks and pine trees, Lori Lindner, co-founder and president of the nonprofit sanctuary, introduced visitors on Thursday to members of her new "packs": a black female with dark honey-colored eyes featured in Sean Penn's 2007 film, "Into the Wild," and a large male that fathered seven of the rescued wolf dogs.

Lindner, 46, recalled with a sigh arriving at the Wolf Country USA attraction in Anchorage earlier in the month to begin preparing the animals for the long trip to California.

"It was heartbreaking to see so many of these animals on chains," she said. "Wolf dogs are products of human vanity and machismo."

The trouble is that crossing wolves, which have been bred by nature for millions of years to be wild, with dogs, which have been genetically manipulated for thousands of years to serve humans, creates a conflict of innate behaviors. As a result, they are often chained up or given away, turned loose or killed, or they escape and are shot or poisoned.

In a 2?-acre enclosure dubbed "wolf mansion," Lindner's husband, Matthew Simmons, called out to six juvenile wolf dogs that were adjusting to a measure of freedom.

"No more pain," said Simmons, 38. "They're getting along amazing well, although there have been a few tussles in which one girl pushed another girl around. But overall, they honestly seem to understand that this is a better environment than where they came from."

The Humane Society of the United States has taken a hard stand against wolf dogs as unpredictable, destructive and rarely trainable. At least 16 states ban them, and California and 20 other states have restrictions on ownership. Alaska prohibits ownership of wolves or wolf dogs unless they are spayed or neutered, fitted with microchips and registered with state authorities.

Lindner and Simmons were alerted by sanctuary accreditation officials that Wolf Country USA was under investigation, accused of illegal possession of wolf dogs. The zoo-like attraction boasted "the largest wolf pack in Alaska" and charged $5 to walk along a path close enough to the animals to take snapshots and, in certain cases, pet one.

"We flew to Alaska and met with the assistant attorney general," Simmons said. "He told us that the state had no place to keep them, and if we didn't take them he was going to dispatch state troopers to shoot them and toss them into a freezer until the court battle with Wolf Country USA was resolved."

In a telephone interview, Werner Shuster, owner of Wolf Country USA, denied that the wolf dogs had been mistreated or that he had broken the law.

"We raised them since they were pups, each one had 12 to 15 feet of space and they were the healthiest animals on the planet," said Shuster, 82. "They do better on chains. That way they don't fight, and people can pet them."

Money to take the wolf dogs to the sanctuary came from a $5,000 donation from the Humane Society and a "very, very large donation" from Bob Barker, who hosted the TV game show "The Price is Right" for 35 years, Simmons said.

Because of their histories, size, strength and often unstable temperaments, the wolf dogs need lots of care. The nonprofit International Fund for Animal Welfare donated $43,000 to construct nine new enclosures with 10-foot-high fencing.

The sanctuary needs $3,000 a month for maintenance and about $350 a day for raw meat, day-old products bought from local grocery stores at a discount. It is also negotiating the purchase of a nearby 180-acre property that would be devoted to dozens more rescued wolf dogs and wolves. "We need $250,000 for a down payment on the property," Simmons said.

To help reduce the costs of the operation, which already housed 20 rescued wolf dogs, the sanctuary launched Warriors and Wolves, a program designed to pair wolf dogs with combat veterans volunteering there to try to overcome physical injuries and lingering anxieties.

Stanley McDonald, 48, who was diagnosed with severe post-traumatic stress disorder after he returned from the Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm, is among veterans who have become full-time volunteer ranch hands at the sanctuary.

Stepping through the gate of an enclosure where three wolf dogs paced warily, McDonald said, "I see a lot of myself in these animals. Like them, I was lost and troubled until I came here. Now, there's a lot of healing going on."

Christmas pilgrims pray for peace in Bethlehem (Reuters)

BETHLEHEM, West Bank (Reuters) ? Thousands of foreign pilgrims and Palestinian Christians, some in Santa hats, gathered at Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity Saturday to pray for peace at the place where Jesus was born.

Loudspeakers blared carols in Arabic and a Palestinian cleric in a festive purple robe pleaded for peace in the Holy Land and in the wider Middle East.

"We ask the baby of Bethlehem to give us the peace we really need, peace in all the countries of the Middle East. We demand peace in the Holy Land," said Latin Patriarch Fuad al-Tuwal.

The church leader, whose entourage included a man dressed as Santa Claus riding in a jeep, had arrived from Jerusalem earlier after crossing into Bethlehem, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, via an Israeli checkpoint through a towering concrete wall.

Israeli and Palestinian officials said at least 50,000 visitors had arrived in the steep hillside town, and many were expected to attend midnight mass at the church in Manger Square, the place where Christians believe Christ was born.

"It's really hectic, but everybody is happy so it's really nice to be here," said Emily, a tourist from Denmark. "And, well, it's just so nice to experience everything with people who believe in the same thing."

The number of foreign visitors to Bethlehem has risen steadily in the past few years, encouraged by a decline in the Israeli-Palestinian violence that often marred the occasion in the past.

Bethlehem, just a few minutes' drive from Jerusalem, is inside West Bank territory captured by Israel in a 1967 war, which Palestinians want for a future state.

Diplomacy toward reaching that goal stalled months ago in a dispute over Jewish settlement building.

"Obviously it's very special to be at this place where Jesus was born, as part of a tradition of the Christian church," said Ted Settle, an American pilgrim.

"It's very meaningful to be here with the people of Palestine who have endured so much hardship, to be here where Jesus was raised and taught about justice and peace."

Local Palestinian police with automatic weapons patrol the streets of Bethlehem, with Israeli troops controlling the nearby concrete wall and checkpoint on the road to Jerusalem.

In Manger Square, tourists mingled with locals, many of whom wore red and white Santa caps as an Arabic rendition of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" played over a sound system.

Reports: Doni admits fixing Serie B matches

Associated Press Sports

CREMONA, Italy (AP) -Former Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni has reportedly admitted helping to fix Serie B matches involving his team last season. He said he agreed to go along with the scam because his team was not supposed to lose.

Doni was among 16 people arrested across Italy on Monday in an ongoing investigation into match-fixing and illegal betting on games.

After five days of solitary confinement, Doni was permitted to meet with his lawyer Friday and was then questioned by prosecutors.

"Yes, I knew about the fix for Atalanta-Piacenza. I gave my approval and I bet," Doni is quoted as saying by Saturday's Gazzetta dello Sport. "I also tried to do the same thing for the match with Ascoli. But they were all personal initiatives, I'm not part of any organization. ... The club didn't know anything."

Atalanta beat Piacenza 3-0, while the Ascoli vs. Atalanta match finished 1-1. Details have not yet emerged as to precisely what Doni did in the fixed games.

In June, 16 people were arrested as part of the first wave of the inquiry, and Doni was then placed under investigation.

Doni said at the time that he was innocent but in August he was banned from football for 3 1/2 years by the Italian football federation's disciplinary committee, and Atalanta - which was promoted to Serie A for this season - was given a six-point penalty.

"I said yes to the fixes because Atalanta benefited," Doni said, according to the Gazzetta. "I would have never listened to anyone who offered me money to make my squad lose. I made a mistake and now I can't even look at myself in the mirror because it makes me think about all the pain I've caused my family and the fans.

"The relegation to Serie B hurt me and that's why I accepted these offers," Doni added. "By winning we were sure to be promoted."

The latest arrests come five years after another major match-fixing scandal - restricted to club and referee officials but not players - resulted in Juventus getting relegated to Serie B for a season, plus point penalties for Lazio, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Reggina in Serie A.

The prosecutors in Cremona, who are leading the current investigation, have detailed an extensive match-fixing ring stretching as far as Singapore and South America and that has allegedly been in operation for more than 10 years.

Three Serie A matches from last season are also under investigation: Brescia vs. Bari, Brescia vs. Lecce and Napoli vs. Sampdoria.

A phone call was reportedly intercepted between Doni and Ravenna goalkeeping coach Nicola Santoni - who was also arrested - in which the pair discuss tampering with Santoni's iPhone, which had been confiscated by police in June.

Doni was arrested on suspicion of attempting to destroy evidence. He was due to be released from prison Saturday, but will remain under house arrest.

Others arrested Monday include former Inter Milan and Roma player Luigi Sartor, former Serie B player Alessandro Zamperini and active players Carlo Gervasoni of Piacenza and Filippo Carobbio of Spezia.

Release of 2012 SEC Football Schedule Delayed

Patrick Brown
Chattanooga Times Free Press

Read the source article

Following the recent additions of Texas A&M and Missouri to the SEC, the league has yet to release its adjusted 14-team schedule for 2012. Two SEC athletic directors said publicly last week that the release would come before Christmas, but the SEC posted a statement on its official Twitter account Thursday updating the situation?s status.

?Working through the final stages of the 2012 football schedule,? the statement read. ?We?ll release it once it?s complete, but not before Christmas.?

UT athletic director Dave Hart did not disclose a time in which to expect the SEC?s new schedule in an interview with the Times Free Press late last week.

?We?ve been heavily involved as athletic directors through the commissioner, Mike Slive, and the SEC staff,? Hart said. ?We?ve met very regularly and recently met again, just to try to come to a decision on next year?s schedule. We?ve got to get ?12 done, and then we can worry about beyond ?12. We?ve made progress on that.

Value investing and the pre-depression circumstances at the ...

The article below is a guest contribution by Paul Sandison*.

Investment Postcards of the December 17, 2011 directs the reader to this week?s WealthTrack programme, in which Consuelo Mack interviews two value investors, Chris Davis of the Davis Funds, and David Winters of the Wintergreen Fund.

I give the pair 5 stars ***** for their account of value investing, which in normal times is a valid and beproven way to go if one is not a day trader.

However I give 3 stars *** only for the response to the questions of what to do in a depression and how to protect against high frequency trading. In this article I will only deal with the circumstances around the vexing question of how to protect one?s investments in a depression.

In the last depression the Dow Jones index sank to 8% of its 1929 highs. It took 26 years from 1929 to 1955 for the Dow to reach the same level as the peak of 1929. Which small private investor, especially a person investing for retirement, has that time horizon? Private people invest not only for dividends but also for growth. Which firms maintain high dividends during a depression? Also, many firms collapse in a depression which often means the shareholders lose everything. Lastly, in this present pre-depression time, should a responsible investor not keep a considerable amount of cash for investing at the bottom of the crash?

Of course some may counter with the argument things are different now ? that 50 years ago 90% of the stock market shareholders were private citizens whereas today 90% of the shareholders are institutions. There may well be differences between the behaviour of individuals versus institutions during a burgeoning depression but it would be interesting to know what those differences might be. Even if an institutional investor does not have any skin in the game he or she is bound to be gripped by amazement and shock when the market drops vertically and not too seldom ?adjust the portfolio? and sell. For why else do we have the spectacular falls of 2001, 2008 and even the lesser drop of the fall of 2011? I submit that fear takes over. For all the Fibonacci tools at his disposal, would an institutional pension funds manager really think ?Oh, this is such a huge drop, this cannot carry on, the market must bounce right back up??

Consuelo Mack put very cogent questions to the pair without receiving, in my opinion, adequate answers. Her questions are at once both current and valid. At this fraught time they should be one of a number of relevant intensive and sustained topics among economists and investors. The result of her interview, while quick and interesting, is therefore only a starting shot. Far more needs to be discussed and explicated.

When I first started writing in Investment Postcards about 3 years ago, the danger then was a US? banking sector teetering on the brink of collapse, and a deflationary spiral in the US including some Central and Eastern European countries. The interventions by the US Federal Reserve, including two massive bouts of Quantitive Easing (in essence, money printing) has changed the economic and stock market landscape not only in the US but around the world. By propping up the US banks the US deflationary cycle has been delayed, but at a huge cost to the taxpayers and without addressing the underlying lack of production and employment in the economy.

SEATTLE (AP) ? Fights, vandalism and arrests marked the release of Nike's new Air Jordan basketball shoes as a shopping rush on stores across the United States led to unrest that nearly turned into rioting.

The outbursts of chaos stretched from Washington state to Georgia as shoppers ? often waiting for hours in lines ? converged on stores Friday in pursuit of the shoes, a retro model of one of the most popular Air Jordans ever made.

In suburban Seattle, police used pepper spray on about 20 customers who started fighting at the Westfield Southcenter mall. The crowd started gathering at four stores in the mall around midnight and had grown to more than 1,000 people by 4 a.m., when the stores opened, Tukwila Officer Mike Murphy said. He said it started as fighting and pushing among people in line and escalated over the next hour.

Murphy said no injuries were reported, although some people suffered cuts or scrapes from fights. Shoppers also broke two doors, and 18-year-old man was arrested for assault after authorities say he punched an officer.

"He did not get his shoes; he went to jail," Murphy said.

The mayhem was reminiscent of the violence that broke out 20 years ago in many cities as the shoes, endorsed by former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan, became popular targets for thieves. It also had a decidedly Black Friday feel as huge crowds of shoppers overwhelmed stores for a must-have item.

In some areas, lines began forming several hours before businesses opened for the $180 shoes that were selling in a limited release.

As the crowds kept growing through the night, they became more unruly and ended in vandalism, violence and arrests.

A man was stabbed when a brawl broke out between several people waiting in line at a Jersey City, New Jersey mall to buy the new shoes, authorities said. The 20-year-old man was expected to recover from his injuries.

In Richmond, California, police say crowds waiting to buy the Air Jordan 11 Retro Concords at the Hilltop Mall were turned away after a gunshot rang out around 7 a.m.

No injuries were reported, but police said a 24-year-old suspect was taken into custody. The gun apparently went off inadvertently, the Contra Costa Times reported.

Seventeen-year-old Dylan Pulver in Great Neck, New York, said he's been looking forward to the release of the shoes for several years, and he set out at 4:30 a.m. to get a pair. After the first store he tried was too crowded, he moved on to a second location and scored a pair.

"I probably could have used a half a size smaller, but I was just really happy to have the shoe," he said.

The frenzy over Air Jordans has been dangerous in the past. Some people were mugged or even killed for early versions of the shoe, created by Nike Inc. in 1984.

The Air Jordan has since been a consistent hit with sneaker fans, spawning a subculture of collectors willing to wait hours to buy the latest pair. Some collectors save the shoes for special occasions or never take them out of the box.

A new edition was launched each year, and release dates had to be moved to the weekends at some points to keep kids from skipping school to get a pair.

But the uproar over the shoe had died down in recent years. These latest incidents seem to be part of trend of increasing acts of violence at retailers this holiday shopping season, such as the shopper who pepper-sprayed others at a Wal-Mart in Los Angeles on Black Friday and crowds looting a clothing store in New York.

Nike issued a statement in response to the violence that said: "Consumer safety and security is of paramount importance. We encourage anyone wishing to purchase our product to do so in a respectful and safe manner."

The retro version of the Air Jordan 11 was a highly sought-after shoe because of the design and the fact that the original was released in 1996 when Jordan and the Bulls were at the height of their dominance.

Pulver said they were a "defining shoe in Jordan's career."

Other disturbances reported at stores in places like Kentucky and Nebraska ranged from shoving and threats to property damage.

In Taylor, Michigan, about 100 people forced their way into a shopping center around 5:30 a.m., damaging decorations and overturning benches. Police say a 21-year-old man was arrested.

In Toledo, Ohio, police said they arrested three people after a crowd surged into a mall.

In Lithonia, Georgia, at least four people were apparently arrested after customers broke down a door at a store selling the shoes. DeKalb County police said up to 20 squad cars responded.

In Northern California, two men were arrested at a Fairfield mall after crowds shoved each other to get in position for the Nikes, police said.

In Stockton, Detective Joe Silva said a person was taken into custody at Weberstown Mall on suspicion of making criminal threats involving the shoes. Police also were investigating an attempted robbery in the mall's parking lot. The victim was wrongly believed to have just purchased Air Jordans.

In Tukwila, Officer Murphy said the crowd was on the verge of a riot and would have gotten even more out of hand if the police hadn't intervened.

About 25 officers from Tukwila and surrounding areas responded. Murphy said police smelled marijuana and found alcohol containers at the scene.

"It was not a nice, orderly group of shoppers," Murphy said. "There were a lot of hostile and disorderly people."

The Southcenter mall's stores sold out of the Air Jordans, and all but about 50 people got a pair, Murphy said.

Shoppers described the scene as chaotic and at times dangerous.

Carlisa Williams said she joined the crowd at the Southcenter for the experience and ended up buying two pairs of shoes, one for her and one for her brother. But she said she'll never do anything like it again.

"I don't understand why they're so important to people," Williams told KING-TV. "They're just shoes at the end of the day. It's not worth risking your life over."

Congo security forces crush rival swearing-in plan (Reuters)

KINSHASA (Reuters) ? Congo security forces squashed an attempt by top opposition figure Etienne Tshisekedi to swear himself in as president on Friday, blocking him in his residence and teargassing and arresting his supporters.

The clashes come after President Joseph Kabila was named winner of a November 28 election that was rejected by the opposition over allegations of fraud, and criticized by international observers for procedural chaos and irregularities.

Kabila was sworn in for a new term in the vast central African state on December 20.

Riot trucks and pickups loaded with police carrying teargas grenade launchers and rifles zoomed through Kinshasa's streets, while tanks and heavy armed republican guard sporting red berets were deployed inside the stadium grounds where Tshisekedi had planned his rival swearing-in ceremony.

The poll was the second since a 1998-2003 war that killed more than 5 million people, and was meant to shore up the country's fragile gains at stability.

Mindy McCready's mom wants grandson back in Fla. (AP)

FORT MYERS, Fla. ? The mother of country singer Mindy McCready wants her grandson back.

Gayle Inge and her husband, Michael Inge, said Thursday in a news release that their 5-year-old grandson Zander should be returned to them in Florida.

Under Florida law, Inge is Zander's legal guardian. In November, McCready took the boy out of Florida without the permission of Florida's courts. The singer and her son were found in Arkansas. McCready told The Associated Press that she took the boy because she feared he was being abused at her mother's home; Gayle Inge has denied the allegations.

Zander is currently in the custody of Arkansas child welfare authorities. The Inges say Arkansas shouldn't have jurisdiction over the case and that being away from his Florida family isn't in the boy's best interest.
